The Willful Wave

Water. The mysterious depths. Few dragons know what secrets water holds, what the brooks babble to those that listen closely enough...Water holds a power that is deceptive, those shining waves hiding raging riptides and murky darkness.

Coming across such a secret, the dragon known as Ceto, a smaller than average fae, now holds more knowledge regarding the Water flight than many could ever hope to. To the younger dragons the artefact that she has stolen away with is nothing more than a fun book, something that creates visions of the stories Ceto will often tell, but she knows it’s far more than that...

She knew this book held something powerful – The soul of an ancient water dragon, trapped within it’s pages. Some dragons have reported hearing a wailing sound coming from the book, a heart wrenching cry. A reminder that Ceto must still uphold her promise to reunite mother and child.

After all, Who knows what would happen if she failed...?

Droplets of water dripped rhythmically around Ceto as she crept through the darkness towards the glowing light. The cavernous floor was slick with moisture, so she moved carefully. The air was thick with the scent of the sea. It was almost suffocating...but the glowing light invited her deeper into the ominous cove.

All creatures stayed far, far away from this mysterious cove due to an unsettling rumor. All creatures except Ceto. She was a dragon who just couldn't help herself when there was an opportunity to explore, after all. So when she had spotted a flash of light, the fae was already scrambling into the darkness. Who cares if the cave was cursed?

The glowing light glanced off the cove's walls, cutting through the darkness. Her dark blue eyes widened with curiosity as she stalked closer to the source. She bunched up her haunches and, with a wiggle, pounced on one of the stray light beams! She lifted up her tiny paw only to find that, to her disappointment, the light had disappeared. She soon spotted another one, however, and began to chase it as well. The light beams drug her deeper and deeper into the cove, until she found herself not pouncing on a light...but a book, instead.

It was just a rather water-logged leather bound tome with the water emblem etched into the cover. But, as soon as Ceto's paws touched the book, the water emblem started glowing brighter. Chills ran down Ceto's spine as a voice blared through her head. "Where is she!?" The voice sounded angry and...panicked? The dragon gasped and scrambled backwards, eyes wide with fear as she twisted and turned, looking for the source of the voice. But there was no one there. Her eyes fell back on the book...and that's when its cover flew wide open.

Water began gushing out of the book in torrents, slamming into the ceiling. The impact shook the entire cove, causing rock shards to rain down around the tiny fae. She covered her head, frightened, as the disembodied voice continued.

"Where is she!? What happened to my child!?"

Ceto clung to the stony floors as streams rushed past her. The cove was beginning to flood. Blinking the water out of her eyes, the hatchling looked up at the sight before her. The water gushing out of the book was beginning to warp into the form of a dragon. It opened its jaws, water spilling out, and let out another roar.

"Where is my child!?" The cove was rumbling more and more. At this rate, it was going to collapse on top of Ceto! The fae felt a surge of adrenaline. Her fins flared confidently and she shouted back at the dragon.

"I know where your child is! I can help you find her!" It was a big fat lie, but she was desperate. Immediately, the towering dragon's head jerked towards her. Its teeth were bared in a snarl, but as soon as its eyes locked on Ceto, it seemed to almost be caught off guard. Its eyes suddenly softened. Then, everything stopped.

The rumbling cave stopped. The flooding water stopped. The loud, angry voice stopped. Now, the only sound that filled the cove was the occasional pinging of water droplets hitting the cavern floor.

"Fine," the voice suddenly replied, much quieter this time. Suddenly, the dragon began to warp again. It started to break apart into smaller globes of water. The globes began to float gently around the room. They danced around Ceto, casting soft beams of light all around the cave. Her fear was replaced with awe as the globes of water began to morph into different shapes and patterns. It was almost as if they were telling a story, painting pictures out of water. Dragons, islands, beastclans...eggs. One by one, the water disappeared back into the book, until there was nothing left.

Ceto stared at the book. The voice continued. "I have all the knowledge in the world about the Water Flight. Now, take me to where my child is."

With a gulp, the fae nodded. Warily, she placed her paw back on the book. The water emblem began to glow again as she picked it up.
