Kisai Meng.
↠ High Speaker

”Hold yourself upright and proper, Kisai," was what her mother would always hiss in her ear as she straightened her posture, what she would mutter from between clenched teeth while she dragged the comb roughly through Kisai’s hair. And those words would echo in her skull as her mother laced up her dress, tight and choking, to the point of gold digging coldly into her skin. “A real lady does not feel discomfort. Does not feel pain. Numb yourself, Kisai. Become like ice.”

Sadly for her mother, Kisai numbed everything, even her connection to the woman that gave birth to her. Especially to the woman that had born her, put her in this world, and then treated her like yet another pawn. Her father... was never in the picture. He had been a donor or maybe an unwilling participant long ago, then had been made to disappear.

It doesn’t matter. None of it truly did. Kisai stood straight and upright, head held up highly and proudly so, as she trailed after her mother, the High Speaker. Like liquid honey, lies and truths blurred from her mother’s tongue, bled into each other, and became one and the same— sides of the same coin. She soaked it all up. She learned because she knew that she needed every single lesson life in her mother’s shadow provided her with.

Coldness seeped into her bones, her soul, her heart, and her mind. It numbed her thoroughly and properly, until every kind of pity or sympathy was long frozen over and withered— long dead before she placed her hand in the taller, rougher one of her new husband. Her mother had picked this union for her, because mother knew best, but in the end, it was just another humiliation under the guise of lessons. One in a long line of many.

She married the man because of the connection it would forge; something her mother could use very well and something that she had no usage for. At least her new husband had a lovely young daughter, a thing like a blooming rose, dew still clinging to the half open chalice of the velvety petals. Fresh and unused, on the verge of being flocked by men and women alike for her beauty.

But oh, this little one had such a delightful secret, such a wicked one. Every night she donned the gown of her mother, it was her perfume that lingered in the hallways of her too cold home. Kisai’s cold heart did a little, excited jump within her narrow chest. This one would be such a delight to play with. She couldn’t get over it. Razela, sweet and innocent and so very wicked, looked like a deer trapped as she slipped into her father’s bedroom.

She slipped in like sweet smelling smoke and found Kisai wide awake and waiting for the phantom of flesh and blood and scent. Waiting and eager. Her eyes grew large and round as Kisai’s gown slipped, pale upon pale exposed to moonlight and candles' flames. She almost felt like a large, predatory wolf as she preyed upon the innocence of the young girl.

The rest was easy, child’s play almost, as Kisai had learnt it well, to manipulate, to turn and twist minds. She smelled the poison long before her husband poured it so generously in his tea and she did not bat an eyelash to the suffering of the poor man, lonely and isolated in his grief. His end was the perfect one to a life filled with rotten love and suffering.

After her husband, it was her mother’s turn. This one, however, Kisai took into her own hands. S did it herself and it worked miraculously. The old High Speaker fell sick and passed away before noon, and Kisai played the part of the grieving daughter to utter perfection. Support and well wishes poured into her home as she left behind a broken-minded toy, still doggedly loyal and starstruck by her. With the death of her husband and Razela’s coming of age, her supposed deed of acting as the kind stepmother vanished, smoke from a blown out candle.

There was no need for Razela now and so many younger, fresher faced girls around, all in dire need of a helping hand to show them how to be a proper lady. To teach them how to numb the pain of a suppressed psyche.
