Biography

From the Norse Goddess Sif, associated with the earth. Little is known about Sif herself. It's said that she was the wife of Thor and the alleged mother of the equally obscure God, Ullr.

It's said that Sif had an indirect hand in the crafting of Thor's hammer, Mjollnir. Loki, in an extra jerkish mood, decided it would be funny to cut off Sif's golden hair, one of her most defining features. Enraged, Thor grabbed Loki and threatened to break every bone in his body. Loki begged the short-fused Thor to let him go to Svartalfheim and get Sif new hair that would surpass the glory of her original locks. Thor allowed Loki this chance.

Loki sought the sons of Ivaldi to craft Sif's new hair, as well as two other creations. The first was Skidbladnir, the best of all ships that always had a favourable wind and could fold up to fit into one's pocket. The second was Gungnir, the deadliest spear of them all.

Done his good deed for the day, Loki went back to being a doinkmeister, staying in Svartalfheim a little longer to cause mischief. He went to the brothers Brokkr and Sindri, taunting them and saying that they couldn't create gifts as splendid as the Ivaldi sons. Going so far as to bet his head that they couldn't do it. Brokkr and Sindri took the wager and set to work.

Loki had transformed himself into a fly to bother them while they worked. First, he stung Sindri on the hand. When the dwarf pulled his creation from the fire, it was the golden boar Gullinbursti who gave off light in the darkness and was faster than any horse even running through water and air.

For the second creation, Loki bit Brokkr on the neck while he worked the bellows. The creation from the fires became Draupnir, a gold ring that created eight new rings of the same weight every ninth night.

Sindri finally placed a piece of iron on the fires, telling Brokkr that they really had to focus and get this one right. Loki immediately stung Brokkr on the eyelid and blood blocked the dwarf's eye, keeping him from working properly. The result Sindri pulled from the flames was a hammer of amazing quality. It never missed its mark and always boomeranged back to its owner after being thrown. Its only flaw was its stumpy handle. Sindri wasn't pleased but they decided anyways to go to Asgard to claim their rewards.

Loki had gone ahead of them with the six creations. To Thor, he presented the hammer Mjollnir and the hair for Sif. To Odin went the ring Draupnir and the spear Gungnir. To Freyr, brother of Freya, went the golden boar Gullinbursti and the best ship Skidbladnir.

The Gods were grateful for their gifts and all agreed that Loki had to hold up his end of the bargain with Brokkr and Sindri and give them his head. When Loki was approached by the dwarves with knives ready, he quickly added the stipulation that he said they could have his head but not his neck. It meant they couldn't kill him but it didn't mean they couldn't have their own fun with the trickster god. Brokkr and Sindri contented themselves by sewing Loki's mouth shut before heading home.
