"What's blood for, if not for shedding?"

Gender: Female
Occupation: Empress of Clan Paradox (Former: Paradoxian Spymaster)
Hometown: Everbloom Gardens, Viridian Labyrinth
Playlist: xxx

Cold and cunning Hoag has been the longest-seated Empress of Paradox's clan, and age has proven to only make her crueler as a ruler. As a young hatchling, she may have once been an eager and inquisitive little Skydancer but those days have long since passed. Now each move she makes is calculated, and most of her relationships within the clan have an assumed pretense of being nothing more than an illusion- though others do note her bond with Bloodstorm is one much less illusory.

H I S T O R Y

Born into the loving nest of a dark-scaled Bogsneak and pastel Skydancer one would have thought such a gentle home in the woodland paradise of Viridia could raise only gentle hatchlings, and for a while this proved true. In her younger years Hoag, sister to five other siblings, was the epitome of joy and innocent curiosity. In fact, these traits led her to gather her siblings and venture beyond the territory of their paternal clan and off through Tangled Wood into the Scarred Wastelands; unaware of the dangers lurking outside Kaisenna's well-protected nest. Though the young Skydancer would never admit it, especially during that first year of her life, she had become bored at the Everbloom Gardens and -feeling overshadowed by her other siblings- let her restless wanderlust get the better of her. Ready to run out into the world with reckless abandon, without a lick of survival experience, Hoag only sought to bring her sisters along out of guilt, disguising her intentions as a want for them to begin their own clan together or -more ambitiously than realistically- even discover their own, new, territory; one where they could be uplifted just as The Eleven are and become deity like rulers. But the journey proved to be more difficult than Hoag, or any of the hatchlings, could've possibly guessed in their naive youth. Though the group crossed easily from the Viridian Labyrinth their travels worsened, turning sour as soon they set their claws onto the darkened shores of the Tangled Wood. As the Shadowbinder's darkness enshrouded the brood of hatchlings Hoag and Alende, the sister who had risen to be Hoag's 'co-commander', guided them down through the water's edge, following the murky river through the heart of the Wood until it reached its delta of Driftwood. Overcome with increasing hunger and exhaustion the little Skydancer ordered her group of siblings to stay in the Drag, ready and content to live in the habitual marshes for many moons to come. However, many of her sisters disagreed- uneased by the Shadowbinder's eerie territory- and they weren't the only ones. This land was home to a great many dragon clans, none of them too keen on sharing their land or resources with a hoard of unsupervised hatchlings; so much so that after only a few days the sisters found themselves chased into the Foxfire Brambles. The Bramble's magical darkness seemed to choke Hoag, drowning her in shadows, as she fought her way through wicked thorns. The Skydancer lost track of time and of her sisters in Foxfire and spent her time too preoccupied with survival to care. Countless nights passed with her fighting off nightmares and clanless dragons alike, knowing that murder was her only means of survival- no matter what manner of creature she stumbled across- and when Hoag finally emerged on the other side of the sunless territory (in the Scarred Wasteland) she had grown. Gone was her toddling clumsiness, and flightless wings, taken place was the full frame of an adolescent dragoness- albeit starved and scar-covered. For days she stayed by the shaded thicket, patrolling its length for any sign of her sisters, living off the carnage of scavenged meat- fighting vultures for their scraps as many nights passed her by. She never saw her siblings again, though some nights after joining the Clan of Paradox she thought she had caught a glimmer of familiar scales across the Contagion where her new clan had made their home. Being brought into a clan was an adjustment that Hoag never anticipated she'd need to make; ever since leaving her parents' clan at Viridia she didn't plan on joining another set of dragons, and if she even did the Skydance assumed it would at least be on her terms. But when Saga, leader of the clan, had found Hoag's collapsed, bone-thin body just past the clan's borders no one argued about the obsidian Skydancer joining their ranks as a Scout, even as the entire clan was slowly going hungry. As the problem grew worse for the clan, drawing Saga's attention away from his pupil Skydancer, she was officially enlisted into the Hierarchy branch 'Ghost' as a Scout, teaming her up with the Clan's latest set of adolescence to be given a formal role. Among these new rank members is Bloodstorm (the rank's guard), also a Skydancer, tasked with helping Hoag adapt to Clan life; the bond they begin forming here is one that will last Hoag a long while. Concerning Saga, the Wastelands were poison, its prey unfit for the clan to safely eat, and when he began to muse about relocating Hoag saw an opportunity. After the time she had spent in the Shadowbinder's land her knowledge of it was unprecedented among Paradox's clan and with it, she guided fellow scouts through the shadow land (opting to fly off the coast and around the Foxfire Bramble) to the Sunportal which magically shifted the group to the Sundial terrace where Citrine and Saga made the Clan's new home- thus singlehandedly leading the clan into an age of prosperity. The Prophet Begonia praised Hoag as a blessing from Paradox, and the priestesses echoed that she was blessed *by* Paradox- gifted in courage and bravery. Someone must have agreed because not long after the clan had moved, now well-fed and striving, Citrine stepped down from rulership over the Clan; he met with Paradox and Saga was appointed to claim the Emperor's throne, his first notion that Hoag be promoted to be his Spymaster. Content, time seemed to fly for Hoag- an uneventful year soared past. Still, Paradox remained unsatisfied with her Clan, dethroning Peppermint not long after he took over when Saga passed, disapproving of how Peppermint had militarized the group; an ill omen for their future. No, as Begonia had told Hoag, Paradox would only be satisfied with *her* as Empress- the deity feeling that her blessed Skydancer was the clan's only option that guaranteed survival. Believing this Hoag dutifully took to the throne, reassured by Paradox's own words of how Hoag's "clever ambition" would bring her Clan to a greater destiny than any other Emperor could've dreamed. Her first actions rose the Prophet Begonia to become Priest over the Oracle ranks, allowing him to rework that branch of the clan as would be most beneficial to their theological means and studies. Then by his advice, she exalted the entirety of Saga's hierarchy- except for the wrongly accused Pheonix who had become promoted to Mage and Advisor to the Empress per Paradox's command. Guided by both the religious Coatl and the elderly magical Skydancer Hoag reestablished the Clan's ranks under Paradox's watchful eye, she was oft reminded, raising a well-trained branch of servicemen to protect the rest of the Clan. In the following years Hoag became bolder in her orders, not often seeking the council of her Advisor or Prophet or even the Oracle who dwelt within the caverns below the clan's encampment. Her choices were entirely her own. As she realized the near-endless extent of the power trusted to her she stopped regarding how her fellow clanmates, whom she began calling "subjects' would react or be affected by the demands she required or orders she made of them. Soon Hoag had eradicated over half of the forces she initially formed at the start of her reign, keeping only the clan's longest-serving dragons in their ranks and demoting the rest to lowly citizens- making an exception for her close companions, revealing where her true friendships lie. To keep 'peace' within the clan Hoag had begun simply demoting or exalting any dragon who began to speak out about the ruler she had become, using the Lightweaver's dowry for those dragons enlisted to its service to acquire her own growing fortune while spending the clan's stockpile of wealth to expand their territory or enlist new clanmates. With each decision she made, unopposed by anyone with the power to really reprimand the Empress, Hoag felt less accountable for her actions- feeling as though she has finally achieved that long-ago dream of power and godhood. Suddenly, a year and a half after Hoag was appointed to her role as Clan Empress, Hoag has been called by Paradox into an extended visitation within the visionary cave Clairvoyance, so that the diety may finally converse with the clan after an extended silence. Unexpectedly she was reintroduced to the clan, her usual red hood replaced with a gleaming crown that adorned her face. The Skydancer has spoken very little since her emergence; she's refused to address the clan and left Pheonix as pseudo-leader over the clan- only allowing Bloodstorm and the Priestess to see her.
