Aether saw the Gaolers in a dream he had before they came out of the prisons, but he forgot about the dream when he woke up. Since it was such an important message, Grape was sent to calm whatever "creatures" were in the dream. Well, Grape didn't know that the dream was from a seer, so she calmed the Gaolers just how she would calm any dream creature. Well one Gao slipped away without Grape knowing, and Ryuku found him while dreaming. Ryuku, forever impulsive, took the strange creature back with him before he could think otherwise.
Being a dream creature, Canji only knew what Aether had dreamt in his dream; he knew nothing of what it meant to be a Gaoler and didn't know where he came from. He knew he was supposed to guard something, he just didn't know what that something was. So he decided to be Rakasa's personal bodyguard, and Ryuku's best friend.
When Ryuku took Canji out of the dream, it created a huge tear in space that almost killed Rakasa, who was sucked into it. Canji jumped in after her and rescued her, and that's that's how they met. The only reason the Gaoler could pass through the tear is because he is a dream creature. After that, Canji became part of the family.

•Since Aether saw Canji in a vision, it is very likely Canji has a twin (ie. the "original" Canji)
•He has a fear of scratching other dragons with his claws, so he clips and files his nails
•Canji doesn't sleep,,, at all. He doesn't see the need for it.
•Canjj does, however, daydream. And daydreamwalk. He runs into walls all the time because of this, and his horns sometimes make dents in the wall.
•Canji eats a bunch. If he doesn't eat enough, he'll unknowingly take energy from Rakasa's Seraph Orbs.
•No one knew he was a dream creature except Rakasa, Ryuku, Grape, and the trusted leaders of Elysian, until his twin showed up.
Shiru, Canji's "twin"/the original Canji, was the Keeper of one of the Gaoler orders. He secretly follows Jei to Elysian because he knows she's hiding something, but instead of finding an answer he finds a Gaoler that looks exactly like him and his ex girlfriend. Canji had been in a huge one sided fight with Aife because of what Shiru has done, and when Shiru arrives, everyone is super confused. Canji and Shiru are freaked out that they have a twin, and Aife sees two dragons that she wants to rip to shreds.. but they look the exact same. Meara, the clan leader, breaks it up in the end. Aife stomps off, and Shiru and Canji are left to sort out their whole deal. They obviously don't, cause Shiru books it out of Elysian before Canji can say a word.
