Against Stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.

E ach small village he was sent to seemed to have it's own little folk lore, legends, it's demons that stalked the shadows. normally he became one of those demons by the time he had left a place, killing his target and leaving as quickly as he came without notice. he would regret taking this job until his last day particularly after meeting it's guardian face to face and finding out there was a creature far more danger than he could ever hope to be.

Ihaka was a known assassin wanted for his crimes back in the day; murdering those who deserve it, serving justice for the lower class people by solving “cases” by eliminating the threat, or even taking down those who threaten to attack the innocent. Even as an assassin he would do what he felt was the right thing to do, which is why Ihaka was welcomed with open arms into the Moon Clan as a loyal guard, a protector.

He had made enemies there was no doubt, but he had retired more or less from assassinations and the like and taken up a guard's sword. he had always tried to be good, do good, no matter that he was taking life, it weighed heavily on him that his path had lead him to that as well, protecting the innocent from those who would harm them was worth it or so he told himself many, many times. but he had semi retired when he joined Moon clan months ago, taking up a guard's sword and becoming a loyal protector for the clan. he had even had a nest of two of hatchlings, but his former mate had up and run with them so he had never seen them much less met his own spawns.
Now he was walking to a mountain village where he had been hired and needed to meet his employer, but first he had to get up the arid mountain. the earth under his claws was looks and dry, he sighed and continued walking, it was much warmer than her generally preferred and travel by air was not recommended so high up as cross winds made air travel dangerous. he wasn't happy about being hired for another assassination job, but he was contacted by a friend's son and he would not turn his back on his friend's kin.

The village he finally arrived at was lovely, the river and castle ruins gave the area and air of history as well as an almost eerie feeling when one first enters, but any unease is quickly dissipated by the village which was lovely and seemed to be in full bloom. the dragons were friendly, the scents of fresh baked pies and other sweets made him smile with memories of his own hatchling days, the orchards and other plant life seemed to be celebrating he watched several hatchlings race past, one bumped into him and looked up nervously.
Ihaka smiled kindly at the hatchling and offered the little one some sweets, the rest of the hatchlings gathered around and he chuckled, offering more sweets to the group of hatchlings. he noticed two red dogs, he couldn't tell the breed as he continued on his way to a Inn. he looked around and saw the Inn was simple, wooden walls and floor with several windows. he saw the drake he was supposed to meet and walked to the tabled he occupied, sitting down he looked the Ridgeback up and down a moment, noticing the scars and skittish behavior.

"Ihaka the assassin?" the ridgeback asked softly
"Are you Irona?" Ihaka asked
"Yes." the ridgeback said looking around and shifting a bit as if uncomfortable.
"So who's the target?" Ihaka asked
"One of the high rankers in the village, Neban, power went to her head and she's started making threats to me and my family. I need this done quietly!" he pled.
"Calm down, son, quiet is why you hired me." Ihaka said "I need a description of this fella though."
"Dark fur, light blue eyes, tundra female." Irona said.
"Fine, payment is given after the job is complete, if you skimp on it or pull a trick I'll kill you." he growled.
"No problems, I have the treasure." he said holding his claws up in a gesture of surrender "Meet back here in a week so I can pay you?"
"Sounds fine." Ihaka said.

Once again he found himself wearing a dark cloak with knives held close to his sides as he walked at leisurely pace, true not many were out at this time, but it was better to seem as if he belonged rather than draw attention to himself. now he was following this tundra, Neban, he had been hired to kill, it was something rather amusing as he learned more about her. she had lead a grand clan, sister clan to another and in the end she had betrayed everyone by slaughtering the sister clan with an ally and allowing her own clan and the former ally to destroy each other, running at the last minuet.
Now she lamented the 'tragic attack' that had taken everything from her for the sympathy of those around her even as she abused some in the village, the less protected, making threats against them, their families, and their sources of income. it made him sick, how some dragons could turn their backs on everything and use their clan, mates, and hatchlings for their own personal gain. at the moment he was gathering information on his target, not on her past or what she was doing now, he knew that, he was looking at her habits and what she did during the day and night.

He chose to do the night wanderings first as his dark hide and clothes worked in his favor during the night and he could sleep though the day once he was done, taking another day to get back on the right pattern and put her back at ease before he struck. it was simple and he had found the simple method was the best as it seemed to work better or so he had found in the past. he watched Neban look over her shoulder several times as she walked, he move silently and looked at shop windows and the like.
Once she was in her home he smiled and turned around and started back toward the Inn he was staying at, as he was walking a red hound padded up to him and looked up. Ihaka looked down at the big dog and gave a slight smile as he held his hand out for the dog to sniff, not being attacked he took that as a good sign and carefully pat the creature's head. the hound closed his eyes and huffed, Ihaka looked up at the sky and let out a breath before he looked at the animal again.

"You know, Pup, this village would be a nice place to retire." he looked down "Unfortunately I don't think I'm suited for this kind of peace."

It was several days later that he was once again walking in the darkness, it was natural to him to hide in while he walked. he watched Neban abuse one of her house mates, threatening their livelihood before walking off with her head held high. Ihaka scowled and walked forward, keeping to the shadows as he followed her hoping she would pass close enough that he could kill her quietly and get away as most clans, villages, cities, and towns frowned upon killing and punished it rather harshly.

He followed the tundra quietly as she walked with purpose to wherever she was going, watching her go into a warehouse. he crept closer and listened to her talking with others, snarling about something he couldn't hear, he opened a window just enough to hear. the dragoness was talking about taking over or if she couldn't do that destroying the village and the drakes with her were supposed to help her in this endeavor, the drakes were supposed to have brought warriors under the guise of those looking for a home to live in peace.

"I Need warriors!" she snarled, claws coming down harshly on one of the drakes with her.

He reared back and pressed his hand to his eye scowling while his companion stepped forward "And they need time to get here!"
"I don't have time, if I want this pittiling little village under my control I need warriors, assassins, dragons that can do my bidding and enforce my will." Neban snapped.
"The paths are difficult to travel, they are coming, but it will take time." the one speaking said.
"When?!" she snarled.
"A month." he said.
"Make sure they get here by then." she said darkly walking away.

Ihaka moved quickly into the shadows as Neban and her companions walked out, the tundra going one way and the two males, a pearlcatcher and a guardian, went another way. he moved, catching Neban and clamping a hand over her mouth as he disappeared into the shadows again, in the fight that came next her eyes turned black as did her claws, when her claws caught his arm the scratch burned more than it should have. he cursed as she got off a short yelp before he was able to move back into the shadows again.

He walked down the ally and through a different pathway through a different street in hopes of not being seen by her companions now running down the ally he had just left to find her. he froze when he heard a growl, low, deep, and menacing, he looked up to see the red furred dog snarling at him. it's fur was bristling and it's hackles raised, he held his hands out in a non-threatening gesture and moved slowly in hopes of getting past the hound.

"Easy boy, you're alright." he said evenly.
the hound growled again and snapped his jaws.
"Easy, just be quiet ok, I just want to leave." he said
The hound started barking and Ihaka cursed as the hulking guardian charged him with a roar; Ihaka's eyes widened in horror and he moved quickly to dodge the massive drake only to feel sharp talons dig into his shoulder.

Hor-divider-640.png

He groaned as he looked up seeing a massive wolf beast with red fur standing over him as he looked up. the wolf beast bite harshly into his arm and shook his head, looking closer he saw what seemed to be black slime come out of the wound and turn to ash. Ihaka didn't know what to make of this, knowing the dog had caused more damage then the scratches as blood welled up in the bite marks. he saw the pearlcatcher and guardian that had been attacking him laying motionless at the entrance of the ally.

"Thank you. I think." he rasped although he wasn't sure what he was thanking the beast for before his eyes grew heavy again.

Waking up he wasn't sure if what he had just seen had been a nightmare or if he had really seen the massive red wolf monster, he had never really believed in the Eleven or any kind of higher power, but such a nightmare was nearly enough to make him rethink his stance.
He got up slowly, joints stiff and cracking as he stood, he limped back to his Inn and ignored the stares he received as he went to his room and began bandaging up his wounds, he would collect his money and leave in the morning.

Hor-divider-640.png

The forest sped by him as he raced into the Tangled woods, he was by far faster and stealthier than his packmates and even his mate. the wind felt good in his white fur even as he slowed to allow the sun to warm his fur as he crouched in the bushes, a dragon passing by made his eyes narrow. he lowered himself to the ground and huffed, recognizing the scent from the nearby clan and knowing it was not one he could attack.

After a few minuets he got to his paws and ran back to the den area, Grandpa was watching the pack and he inclined his head easily to the other male as he made his way into the camp. he, like many of his pack mates, didn't remember much of the past which was probably a blessing as without the memories one could not miss their past nor could the past haunt them with memories of what they had done before being cursed, really for one such as him it was not so much a curse as it was a blessing.
