Reshef The Plagued Prophet / The Suffering Seer Breviloquent | Esoteric | Afflicted As the Wyrmwound roiled, pustulent bubbles rose to its surface and erupted, thickening the air with a miasma of pathogens. In a nest near its edge, the tenuous membrane of a sickly green egg pulsed weakly, a hint of a scrawny sanguine claw somewhat visible beneath its translucent surface. Despite its lack of vigor in its scraping at the inner lining of the gelatinous shell, the membrane gave way, releasing a trickle of viscous chartreuse ichor. Though its flow could only be described as mediocre, the emergence of the ooze was far more impressive than the subsequent spillout of the emaciated, greasy-scaled hatchling that followed. It was clear that this one would not survive the ravages of the Scarred Wasteland. This one was a fluke...and the pair that had generated this offspring knew it, but could not bring themselves to end its existence outright. Gripped gingerly between acid-grooved fangs, the hatchling was mostly silent, occasionally weakly mewling on the long trek towards the Wandering Contagion. Once reaching the edge of the Plaguebringer's domain, the infant was dropped, paradoxically, with both a sense of reverence and disdain, left to fend for itself or to die among the wastes that were intended to make it strong, which, both parents knew, would never be the case. Surprisingly, despite his fragility, the little hatchling persevered, dragging himself towards the Tangled Wood with resolve. As he reached its murky borders, the bioluminescent fungi seized upon the opportunity to infiltrate his feeble body, taking advantage of his severely crippled immune system, glowing hyphae wending their way into his very cells, and all of the interstices between them. |
