Once upon a time, this heckin' guy used to hang around Sornieth's Auction House with some buddies of his and point a price scanner at himself and shout "TOO EXPENSIVE FOR YOUS" at passing dragonfolk while the scanner beeped a pricetag of 2,000,000,000  and everyone laughed, sometimes even the people he was shouting at. It was a hoot, and his favourite way to pass time.But one day, someone stopped and listened to his bit and laughed along with the fellas and everything was great. Except they didn't leave after. They just stood there, staring at him funny. Tunnelsnakes started to get the creeps. And then the person says: "Wait a second... when were you born?" Their eyes got all squinty, like suspicious squinty. Tunnelsnakes shrugged, looked around at the fellas and just gave a nervous chuckle before squaring himself up. "What's it to you?" He said. But the rando didn't flinch. Or move. They just kept looking at him. "July 17th, isn't it?" They said and Tunnelsnakes got a bit of a start. That was his birthday, how'd they know? But he had appearances to keep up, so he just shrugged and waved the stranger off. Without a word, they left, and the weird unease went with them. But that wasn't the end of things. He began seeing the stranger entering the Auction House at random times, sometimes leaving with a dragon or two, sometimes empty-handed. But they always stopped by Tunnelsnakes and his friends and they always paused to stare at him. This continued for weeks, and then months, and then years. As time progressed, it became less of a nuisance. Frequency bred familiarity and he'd give the stranger a 'toodle ooh, til next time!' when they departed. He noticed when too much time passed between visits, and he wondered. He actually felt relieved to see them when they returned. The routine continued on, price scanners beeped, laughs were had, Tunnelsnakes was gazed at with some mysterious certainty. Time passed. Again, the familiar stranger visited, but this time, they had a piece of paper. They held it up for him to see. RELOCATION APPROVED: THE 17TH HOUSE. It was a strange moment, because he wasn't expecting any such thing, and yet he felt as though some lingering wait was over. He was completely comfortable with the idea. There was no nagging question about the who or the whats or whys; it was read and it was fact and it felt as natural as that. And so he said his goodbyes and gathered his things and made the journey to the 17th House. When he arrived, there were many there to greet him, and though he didn't know a soul among them, he still felt at ease, felt familiar. It felt as though he was returning to family after years abroad. Welcome home, Tunnelsnakes! His real name is Frederick. |
