 He arrived one day, seeking passage to the heavens as so many others had done; but, unlike them, he displayed a certain reticence about revealing his origins.

Over time, bits and pieces have been made clear. He greatly favors the night, and others have seen a certain gratitude in his expression every sunset. He looks at the sea with a caution not possessed by any other passenger, and refuses all forms of dairy. He is cordial but never close, as if determined at all costs to keep his fellow travelers at a safe distance.

But if he told them the truth...would they accept it? Would they really believe that he came from another world — not from the stars, but somewhere different entirely — lit by endless day? Would they understand the twists in space-time through which he had traveled, and from which he had ultimately fled? And would they be sympathetic — or would they be like those he had met before, who had led him down a path of betrayal ending in his own death?

...Sometimes it really is better to walk away from strange places.
