Biography

Pebble was misplaced as an egg. The egg wound up in a river full of river flights who were just about to crack it open and eat it when he hatched. The river flights decided that this unusually large baby was one of their own- he had the correct amount of arms, legs, and wings and was the correct color, despite some lacking some common river flight characteristics such as fur. The river flights were absolutely delighted at how big and strong their new adopted child was growing, and he was brought up as one of them. To this day, Pebble is mediocre at best at being a dragon, but he makes for a tremendous river flight.

”The river run muddy in the dry season, the water that had previously flowed unobstructed by sediment in its verdant bed was now thick rancid slurry that barely moved. Flies and mosquitoes cajoled dragonflies to join them in the treacherous mud, their larvae squirmed in the sun-warmed puddles along the banks while numerous small white maggots feasted on the plants and dead fish rotting away on the mud. Where the wet mud ended, dry and crackled clay began. The riverbanks on both sides were covered in angular sun-parched mud plates, and the slight breeze that did not reach the water nor alleviate the shimmering heat blew up small puffs of fine dust.

In the middle of the diminished river was a small island of parched mud and dirt on which several river flights with mud-caked and dusty fur were sunning. They were spread out, lounging sleepily, some prying open shellfish that had been trying to escape the heat deep into the sediment, others grooming the largest clumps of dry mud on each other’s pelts into dust that was scattered into the breeze, others merely enjoying the heat.

Suddenly the entire river trembled; clouds of flies and mosquitoes took flight, the serene dragonflies stole to the sky, the small persistent fish hunting larvae in the stale water darted away, a small bird watching the fish let out a screech and flew off. Only the river flights seemed unbothered, even as their little island trembled and rocked, and began to rise. What had been a muddy island suddenly became enormous shoulders; what had been dirty driftwood sticking out of the mud became horns; what had been wilted pondweed flowing in what little water was left became a muddy beard; what had been pools of warm water in the shallows around the island rose from the mud on its both sides accompanied by wet sucking sounds and took the forms of enormous dripping wet wings.

An enormous dragon covered in mud rose from the gray-brown slurry on the riverbed, leaving behind a muddy pit that quickly began to fill up with dirty water and smelly mud. Perched on its broad shoulders the river flights kept on snoozing, a few glancing curiously around at the sudden shift in perspective but soon merely getting comfortable against the dragon’s mud-caked hide.

Carefully, as not to dislodge its passengers, the dragon waded out of the depleted river, leaving behind a deep track in the soft wet earth. It did nothing to clean itself of the gray-brown mud coating it had , and soon disappeared into the mirages of the sun-parched flat landscape, leaving behind only rapidly drying footprints and a large clouded waterhole where had previously been an island.

Soon, the flies began returning to their feast on the morass, and then the mosquitoes, and then the dragonflies. The small fish found their way through the unsettled waters to where the larvae were, and even the small bird returned and began to sing on the branch of a small tree with drooping leaves. The hole in the river was soon filled with mud and sludge, and a few water striders emerged and began racing each other in the puddles.”
