Emerging from her encasing in the Wiretangle Walk of the Shifting Expanse, Ursula was one of several dragons to be formed from the destruction of the Machine. Although the denizens of Wiretangle were hesitant to welcome Ursula onto their lands, the Stormcatcher allowed her to remain on clan grounds under the condition that she assist the working class in carving out the Lightning Flight's territory, to which she agreed. During this time, she was taken in by Leo, formerly one of Wiretangle's top employees, whom named her.

Leo cared for her as best he could, making sure she was provided with food and water, but during her stay in Wiretangle, they barely spoke to one another. Each of them were assigned different stations; despite Ursula's abnormal level of power for a hatchling, she was physically unable to perform the same duties as Leo, and the areas he operated were deemed too dangerous for a dragon her age to enter. The work she'd been assigned wasn't anything particularly grueling — organizing gears in containers, laying out smaller, inactive wires, and things of similar ilk — but the days were long and monotonous, and the endless stream of thunder and lightning that enveloped the Shifting Expanse frightened her. Other employees, though they never bullied her or demonized her, never spoke to her and almost seemed to avoid her, doubtless because of her association with the Engine. Because of her age, she was allowed to leave work earlier than others, but she'd always fall asleep by the time Leo returned to their den.

As she grew older, she began taking on more strenuous work, rising through the ranks of the Expanse working class and earning the respect of several employees. This respect didn't land her any close friends, however; as soon as work was over, none of her co-workers spoke to her. The longer she remained among the Lightning clans, the more her Arcane energy warped to adapt to her surroundings; eventually, her genetics matched that of the Lightning dragons around her.

When she became an adult, however, she found that life in the Shifting Expanse was not the life she wished to live any longer, finding a life of working day in and day out an unhappy one. She was easily able to leave the Shifting Expanse at the Stormcatcher's blessing, as she was not bound to those lands by any contract or order. Much to her surprise, Leo, whom had long desired to be a sorcerer, followed suit after her, officially retiring from his role as a Lightning Flight employee after decades of processing it.

Via the guidance of the starlight, after eons of searching and wandering, she and Leo eventually found a home in the Violet Sea. While Ursula became a member of the Star Council, Leo (whom had no ties with the dragons of the Engine) was taken in as an apprentice by Lightning Flight ambassador Hywel, and eventually became a member of the Zodiac.
