Each new generation of Belmonts produces stronger, more dedicated vampire hunters. Richter is considered one of the strongest in the Belmont lineage. With a strong sense of justice and an unwavering will, Richter is an opponent Dracula should be more than wary of.

In 1792, Dracula was resurrected by humans who wished for his return. With Dracula and his forces resurrected, Dracula commanded his forces kidnap Richter's girlfriend, Annette, along with a distant relative of the Belmont family, Maria Renard. Richter hurries to the village only to be ambushed by Death, Dracula's second in command, on the way. Death 'tests' Richter by attacking him, and Richter retaliates, Death vanishing afterwards, claiming that during their next inevitable encounter, things won't be as easy. Richter continues, determined to save his girlfriend and kidnapped villagers, and take to Dracula’s forces and Dracula himself down to fulfil his destiny as a legendary vampire hunter, and to restore peace.

Depending on how the player completes Castlevania: Rondo of Blood,
Castlevania: Dracula X or
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, Richter can end up with different endings to the game; some good, some bad.

After defeating Dracula, his grand castle collapses, his forces leave and peace is restored. Four years later, Richter disappears without a trace. In 1797, Dracula's Castle rises once again. At this, Alucard awakens to brave the castle and defeat the evil that plagues the world. Maria investigates Dracula's Castle in hopes of finding Richter, and meets Alucard instead.

After fighting the forces awaiting him in his father's castle, Alucard eventually comes face-to-face with Richter.

Depending on how Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is played, Richter can meet an untimely end or the truth can be revealed as to why he vanished.

Following the end where Richter is saved, it's revealed that Shaft, one of Dracula's loyal servants - who had somehow survived the fight he previously had with Richter - had possessed him, and Richter was the one who resurrected Dracula. Under Shaft's possession, Richter would make it near impossible for other vampires hunter to slay Dracula, due to his status as a Belmont- a supreme vampire hunter. Other vampire hunters would struggle against Richter, and would further deter them from attempting to end Dracula.

Alucard later defeats his father, putting the dark lord back to rest. He, Richter and Maria leave Dracula's crumbling castle, each setting off to live the rest of their lives.

Richter was the last Belmont to wield the Vampire Killer; it was passed down to the Morris Clan, who used the whip until it was returned to the Belmont clan many years later.

During the events of Rondo of Blood, Richter is 19, and 24 in Symphony of the Night.
