Stepping out of the strange library of Grimm, you look to the sky to check the time, only to find your eyes drawn to what looks like a small island far above you. Curious, you make your way to this island, only to find it is much larger than it appears. Largely devoid of structure, it features a strange mod podge of plants and climates. In one section there is a sandy pit riddled with rocks, which borders a small section of grass like the Plateau. There is a grove of trees with long vines, and another with glowing mushrooms, all geographic trademarks from the different Flights. In the center is a large rock platform, circular in shape with sharply sloped edges and a completely flat top. Sitting atop this rock, staring into the sky, is a Pearlcatcher, a shimmering pearl clutched in their talons as many purple-hued eyes flicker around the island. With a smile, they begin to speak.
“Quiet the view, isn’t it,” They speak softly, voice carried on the breeze, “Welcome to my home right now. I am Jarick, and you?”

Author’s Note:
Jarick is not a being of our times, but rather one of all times. Though the exact concept is more complicated, their story is, at its core, a cycle. They are born, they live as a witness to life, they die, and they are reborn. Their past memories are difficult to recall most times, but often come to Jarick in dreams--this is the source of their life’s records. I have compiled the highlights of their memories here, told from their perspective.
~Sincerely, Midnight

Cycle 1: I first saw nothing, endless nothing. It was neither light nor dark, neither terror nor comfort. It was just… nothing. I was something, I think, but I did nothing, felt nothing. It was all endless silence, and that was okay. It was a peace I chase now.

Cycle 5: I witnessed their arrival. The great drakes of this world, the embodiment of elements and power. The Earthshaker builds great walls, the Tidelord endless oceans. The Flamecaller sets the world ablaze and the Windsinger paints it from above. The Lightweaver shines above, annoyed, and the Shadowbinder watches with equal annoyance. The Stormcatcher thrives in the desert and the Icewarden stands proud in the tundras. I watch their war from the sideline, too afraid to enter the fray. I am not sure what I am quite yet, only that I am something now, something that is here to witness. I watch as the world is torn apart and rebuilt, only to be torn apart again by the warring Gods. What am I to do? I fear for our world, I fear to witness it’s demise.
Cycle 67: I’ve seen enough war by now that there should be no surprises, but there is one. I’ve seen catastrophes so dramatic even primordial beings could not withstand their power. I’ve seen the land shake apart and pull together again. And yet, as this native climbs to power by mere words alone, I am shaken. I see all, every minute detail, yet make sense of so little. This prophecy… will it ring true? Will it ring safe? I do not know, but I will see. That I know.

Cycle Unknown: Have you ever stared at something so intently you lose focus on it? It becomes blurry and misshapen, lost in the gears of your mind, and suddenly it’s three minutes later and your tea is done. It is a strange feeling for one with so many eyes to experience, but I have, I think. Time has never been clear to me, but now? Nothing is clear. The Eight are no more, it is the Eleven now. The Shade has returned, but I do not know when. I watched as it’s blackened tendrils reached towards the ground, blurred. I watched as the world ripped apart once more.

Cycle Unknown: I am a dragon. I know that now. I am not nothing, I am not lost, I am not forgotten. I am a dragon, with many eyes to see with. I watch the stars twinkle overhead, the sun beat down on the sands of the desert. I watch my clanmates--the Flyers--commune, rejoice in life. I watch them wither, slowly, under the endless production of the Expanse, and then blossom in the creative winds of the Plateau. I am Jarick, and I am here to bear witness. Always.

Jarick is a philosophical soul, which he says “comes with the territory”. He is aware he is not locked into time and life as others are, and that awareness of his past lives gives him the vision to see the world as it is. He spends hours perched on his island, watching the world in silence. Conversations with Jarick are strange, deep, and often lengthy. Jarick speaks of the past, of the birth of the Eleven, of the Shade and endless war, and of nothing. He tells it all. Despite the weight of his purpose, Jarick is soft. He speaks gently and kindly, whimsy in his voice and understanding in his expression. He listens to stories--trivial or not--and keeps mementos given to him by clanmates. He embraces life in its entirety, welcomes it all with a smile, knowing it is his only companion in the endless cycles. Jarick does not fear death, but he does fear loss. There are only so many times one can be hurt by time and get up again. Forever is a luxury few can afford, and so many have been ripped from his heart by time’s cruel fingers.
Though Jarick is companionable with most of his clanmates, there are two he is closest to. First, Heret, a dragon caught in a similar conundrum with time. The Time Mage is, for all they know, immortal to time, but he suffered amnesia and cannot recall much of his life. Jarick stands on the other side of the coin, immortal to time but unable to forget the loss. Neither know which is preferable, only that they suffer their struggles together. Many days are spent in silent contemplation of their shared situation, though neither are truly searching for an escape. To Jarick, having someone that will be there in the future--even if he loses them in the present cycle--is an enormous comfort.

Grimm is another close friend of Jarick, but more in a confident manner than anything. As Keeper of Tales, Grimm understands the need to record, to take note and remember the details of life. Jarick often finds himself seeking out the Spiral to tell her of a memory he dreamt, verbalizing his life and making it tangible. Grimm never questions this, never pushes his work aside and tells him to come another day, simply pulls out a new book and picks up her quill, ready to listen. If Jarick is the Witness, Grimm is the Chronicler.
