NOTES
|
Y O D
Leader's Mate. Hermit-like.
Turning the Cheek
Yod didn't want fame. She didn't want to be seen as the "queen" or "mother" of this new clan. Heck, she wasn't even mother to Bevyn's son who was so easily stepped into the roll of the little princeling. But Bevyn and Nimmi slid into their new roles the way water fills an empty riverbed during the desert rains. The new members of their clan flocked to both of them. Being Skydancers, their little nuances came across as flirting, preening. They enjoyed the limelight. And everyone enjoyed looking at them. At the beginning, Yod mostly kept to herself, deep inside the cave. Bevyn came back to her every evening, to tell her what was going on. Sometimes they took little strolls around the desert; it was cool enough during the dusk to wander. With her skin color, Yod did not enjoy the harsh sun during the daytime. She missed the dew of the woods. But she had never cared too much for the company of others - other than Bevyn. It was during these evening strolls that she first noticed. Men and women alike would stop to talk to Bevyn, every few steps it seemed. Their eyes shone. The girls preened. They gushed. And her enjoyed it. While she used to ride around his neck, the looks in the eyes of the new members made her feel self-conscious. She started to just walk nearby. More and more often, she was ignored by those who stopped to talk to Bevyn. More and more often, she finished her walks alone. Finally, she just stopped going. When Bevyn asked, she told him the truth. She wasn't comfortable with the level of adoration people showered upon him. Not for himself; she wasn't jealous. She just didn't want to be part of it. She told him bluntly that he was welcome to amuse himself however, as long as he always came home to her in the evening. She would pretend not to notice the looks the young girls gave her as she went about the common areas. But she knew her best friend would always be her best friend. Bevyn still came home every night, and told her all the gossip and news. That was enough for her. |
