In that pillar where the sky turns sideways, where midnight and dawn meet in one vertical stripe, there is a keeper, you know. They say the sap she cures turns to black goldstone. They say she plucks stars to keep as lanterns in that study of hers, at the top of the world. They say she has two voices and speaks in minor harmonies. Do you suppose she's a goddess of some sort? A demon?

Too long on the knife’s edge, too long split ‘twixt the seams in the sky: watch them render, watch them curl forth and rest, raw and weary, at my feet. Stay, old friend, stay: let the familiar twist anew, let the pendulum swing, let your ichor drain until we can drink deep of the dregs of our divinities. What ever has been as it seems? What ever will come of those ruins we left long ago, splintering and shuddering, remade again and again under a starry desert sky?
