INANIS stepped around the fallen Skydancer. Her mate, another Imperial, lay deeper in the woods, in no state any better. He was pleased with his work… But didn’t dare show it. He wasn’t done yet.
If his hypothesis proved correct, this pair would have eggs around here, somewhere. Eggs that the hive could use for their own purposes. Eggs that this Skydancer had stayed behind to protect, while the Imperial went to hunt. In the end, neither had been a sufficient threat to INANIS. They were weak. They were dragons.
As he stepped into the dark cave that the Skydancer had so faithfully defended, something caught his eye. The slightest reflection of light, the subtlest glow of an egg, coming from the darkest corner of the cave. As INANIS reached toward the egg, he spotted something else in the shadows as well. Another egg. And another. And another.
Slowly, as his eyes adjusted to the gloom, more and more eggs became visible, from every corner. Tucked in nooks and crannies, there were more than he could count. More than he thought was possible from a single pair of dragons, let alone all at once.
INANIS breathed a long, slow, breath. He didn’t know what he had uncovered, by assimilating those… two. But whatever strange ability this bloodline possessed, he knew he would proceed with caution.
Even a CONSCIOUSNESS knows better than to mess with something this unnatural.
