Biography
Aelfdene hummed to himself as he carefully arranged cookies on a plate and put them next to the plate of muffins in the glassed in display case. The shop was due to open for the first time in just a few minutes and he wanted to make sure that everything was perfect from the beginning. He had been waiting for this day for years and finally, after lots of hard work, everything was coming together. In a few minutes, he would be a café owner.
He took a moment to look around the shop and admire his handiwork. It was small, barely big enough for three sets of tables and chairs, but it was cozy and in a good location. Other shops that had opened up in this area had usually grown and expanded and Aelfdene was hoping his shop would do the same. His mother had had a good head for business and had been a very successful seamstress. She had hoped he would follow in her footsteps, but he had his own path to forge.
On the burner, the teapot began to whistle and quickly he took it off. He looked through the varieties of tea on the shelf and picked a blend of jasmine and blackberry to help calm his nerves. The tea went into the pitcher to steep and he turned back to the last of the baked treats. He placed the brownies on the plate and put them next to the cookies, then went back to the front of the store to see how it would look to a customer. Satisfied, Aelfdene went back behind the counter and poured his cup of tea.
When he turned back around, he saw that he had a minute left before he was due to open. But he also saw two dragons, a Guardian and a Fae, waiting patiently by the door. The Guardian nodded at his as their eyes met and the Fae’s crest bobbed up and down excitedly. Aelfdene clutched his cup to his chest and smiled. He had customers already, waiting for him to open? He took a quick sip of his cup and put it in the back room. Keys in hand, he went to the front door, unlocked it, and held it open for his first two patrons.
“Hello and welcome to Aelfdene’s!”
