selena: moon, brightness

born for the stars, with wings stitched out of the brightest, prettiest stars and the darkest, softest night. she was once a dreamer, a lover, gentle and beautiful and bright, but from the start, the stars were fated against her. born in a outcast, dirty camp on the edges of the mountains, the dragons around her looked the same; hollow and dark, even those who were born lighter, from the ashes and hopelessness around them. however, selena was different. despite her darkest obsidian body, she had an entire constellation weaved into her wings, wings that could carry her way above the mountains, above the clouds, into the stars, onto the moon. she would soar way beyond her home, shining, shimmering, until those below her could not distinguish her from the night sky.

maybe that's what made those people come. the people who came in the night, cloaked by darkness, and burnt her dirty, god-forsaken village to the ground. the people who, after slaughtering her sleeping mother, took her, screaming and thrashing. and trained her. they would cloak her wings, with some strange, dark magic, such that they could no longer carry her away where they could not catch her. they'd chain her up in iron shackles, in a room with no light and no windows and barely enough space for her to sit and enough air to breathe, let alone spread her wings. and they'd train the 7-year old with the rest of the girls, teaching them ways to slit throats, to kill soundlessly, to torture, to feel no pain till they could slit through their arms and not feel a thing. and when they were ready, they would fight each other to the death, one at a time, until all that's left is a cold, broken killer.

and selena won. she'd never open her eyes for the final blow, never look at the pain and desperation in the eyes of the child she was about to kill. so time after time, she closed her eyes and slit, and stab, and twist, until she could hear the echoes of blade entering skin and bones breaking everytime she closed her eyes. and when she finally knelt there, hands covered in silver blood, holding a still-warm body in the empty room, she thought she was done.

and that's when they gave her the mask. partly so that she would never show a slice of weakness through the slits of onyx, whether tear stained cheeks or shuddering breaths or bloodied lips from when she'd bite through them in disgust. but partly so that nobody would, in their final breaths, look into her still-beautiful child-like eyes and see the pain and hollowness and self-loathing, and feel anything but fear and cold hatred. and after a while, they could stifle any hope that there was still anything out there in the world for her, anywhere where she wouldn't be inches away from sliding the silver dagger out of the still body and straight into her own heart.

when she finally grew older and became too broken for their liking, they had took her out, snipped the roots of her powerful wings, and as a torture specimen for the younger children, stripped her bare onto a metal table and showed them exactly where hurt best. and when they were done, they wrapped her back in the chains she's lived in and left her back in the cold remains of her home. so that she could die in the same place her friends, her neighbours, her family lay. back where she belonged, barely recognisable against the charred ground and ashes.

and there, she was found.

maybe there was still someone looking out for her, someone who guided -- to where she lay, broken and close to death. -- brought her back to --- tbd --- and healed her, her cuts and bruises and broken bones. but they could never undo her wings. while she could still fly, albeit with sharp, stinging pain from where her wounds cut the wind, she could never go back to where she loved; high above the world, in the misty night with the stars littered around her.

in --, she knows there are people caring for her, but there are things she still needs to process on her own. things that still haunt her, still wreck her with grief and leave her jolting awake in the night. still things she wish she could purge herself of, phantom blood on her hands she can't seem to stop scrubbing at, times where she can barely breathe when she forgets that she isn't in that lightless cell, and sometimes she still hears the screams of her victims -- or maybe she's the one screaming, and the echoes run around her head like sirens, taunting her, reminding her.
