Sasuke is the younger brother of Itachi. As a child, he always looked up to his brother and wanted to spent as much time as possible with him. He always saw his brother as a kind person. Thus he did not understand when he had to witness his brother murdering his entire clan, their parents and trapping him in a Genjutsu, showing him the death of their parents again and again.
Sasuke, confused and heartbroken, adapted the picture Itachi wanted him to see, viewing his own brother as a villain and dedicating his life to become stronger, in order to be finally able to kill Itachi.

Sasuke subordinated even his own friends to his personal goal. To gain strength, he left his hometown and accepted pacts with Nukenin, finally surpassing his new Sensei and forming a team on his own. With his new-found strength he tracked Itachi down, but was already expected by his brother.
In a last battle, Sasuke fought Itachi, but was finally inferiour. However, Itachi showed no intention in killing his brother, and in the end he succomed to his own illness.
It was only then that Sasuke heard the truth about his brother, his true nature and intentions and the lies even Sasuke was fed.
Realizing that his brother's only goal was to protect their village and Sasuke's life, Sasuke was left aimless and sorrowful.
