Many years ago, a young dragon tried to fly.
He was blind, and had gone alone; he soon found himself lost, and fell and fell and fell into the trees. Lost, in the Whispering Forest. A place of fairy tales told to naughty hatchlings; told, that the nasty spirits would snatch them up forever if they didn’t eat their meal. A place, that once one entered, they were cursed to never find the way back out. Unfortunately, it was no fairy tale. Lost, alone, afraid, when the smiling and twisted spirits found him. The twisted spirit smelled sweet; the smiling radiated a comfortable warmth that had the young dragon wanting to curl into their side and sleep for a very long time. “Be calm, now,” said the smiling. From the twisted, there came the silent offering of a flower; the young one held it close. Soon, the spirits encouraged him to follow. They walked, for a very long time, and the young one couldn’t keep his eyes open a moment longer. The twisted spirit lifted him gently to carry him for the rest of their journey. When next he woke, it was to other scents surrounding him. The spirits had stopped short of what Derr would soon learn were the Caves—the home of the Collectors—and it was there that they waited. They waited, until the sound of eerily beautiful chimes filled the air; waited, for a soft humming to fill the air. It was a lullaby. Derr hummed back, caring not that the other had too many voices with too many echoes. The lullaby was sweet, and gentle. Derr was raised as a Collector. He oft stayed in the nursery, even as he grew too old for it, offering Innochka help with restless hatchlings—as she had once done for him when he was but a little one himself. His voice was soft, and his quiet lullabies could soothe most any little one. Outsiders have claimed he frightens them. He’d merely tip his head—it would be the mate he fell in love with who would tsk and hiss to let him be. Perhaps he does appear frightening, Perhaps not.
