Clara Stella hummed softly. "Not all are strong enough to withstand winter's biting breath."

Noctis Timore scoffed, "Or the consuming abyss that is the Shade."

Tacet Mare hummed. "Indeed, those that meet the Shade are destined for...destruction...it is not even death...death is kinder than that..."

Noctis Timore chuckled, "Aw, why thank you Tacet Mare! First time you've ever paid me a compliment."

Tacet Mare snapped, "Hardly a compliment, snake."

Clara Stella spoke a little louder. "Now young Absala, you fear that your clan will meet the same end as your previous one. Frankly it is a miracle that you live to fear at all. Guardians that lose their charge fall into a deep despair that seldom return from."

Tacet Mare focused his gaze onto Absala. "Then again...miracles are known to happen. Take this as a sign... a second chance. You are fond of your new clan. Let that love guide you."

The water basin glowed a bright orange and fiery red. The dancing waters created an amazing display of color in the chamber.

"Like the Phoenix," echoed Tacet Mare's sonorous voice, "You have met despair and death. You have felt the ashes of defeat. However, with those lessons ingrained in you..."

A fiery bird burst from the water of the basin. It's wings shimmered glorious as it wheeled around the chamber.

Tacet Mare continued. "You now can rise stronger than ever. Winter has no hold over you. In your chest beats a fierce heart that will know what must be done. Be diligent but not paranoid. Watch over your new family with bravery, kindness, and wisdom."

Clara Stella smiled warmly. "May the stars of the protector guide you in your endeavors."

The phoenix faded and the basin of glowing water returned to a gentle blue. The water reflected on the ceiling, making the crystal sparkle. There was a tranquility that held the mists still in the air.

NOTES & FUN STUFF

• Absala’s charge was her former clan. Though she'd give her life for any of her denmates, of all the dragons, she were closest to an Imperial named Renatus. A novice potion master and mage, he'd often accompany her; gathering herbs and collecting flowers while she performed her patrols.

• For reasons unknown, Renatus' personality slowly twisted and he seemed increasingly reclusive, seldom leaving his den unless mandated. The adoptive child of one of the clan's residents, the clan tried to handle him despite his explosive temper.

• However, things eventually went out of control. Attempting to overthrow her and take charge, Renatus attcked the clan leader, a Coatl named Nurrei. Though she survived the initial attack, she later died. Renatus was forcibly restrained by the clan's head mage and is presently sealed away. Unable to cope with the loss and trauma though, the clan slowly dispersed.

• Since the incident, Absala has suspected Renatus may have been infected by the shade, or involved with some form of Shade magic. Angered and filled with grief by the loss of her friends, she has dedicated herself to learning more about the subject with the hopes her knowledge can spare other clans, as well as possibly restore Renatus to his former self.

• Still working out explaining those sigils from her accent...
