Biography
Quote:
The quiet owner of the Luminaria, a small but oddly popular shop that sells novelty candles, Soleil tends the trade with a great deal more solemnity than one would expect.

The sun goes down.
She watched it fall, dipping below the horizon. Its dying fingers stained the skies with a brilliant fire. Blazing briefly, gloriously, before flickering out. The stars come out. Glittering diamonds sprinkled in black obsidian. Caught in glance, through a windowpane. The candles were lit, their glow replacing the sky. A fire flicked and licked in the hearth. Something boiled over the stove, filling the room with the scent of ripened spice. Homey. Inviting. And all that counts, is here and now. Deep breaths, gathered and released. Settled into a plush chair, eyes blankly scanning the page of some book she’d read a dozen times. Waiting. Her heart beat fast and faster, racing to some unknown beat. My universe… …was going to end. Here. Tonight. Will never be the same. …perhaps it could remain. Shattered. Changed irreparably. But this wouldn’t kill her. She hoped. Looking up, into the flames that licked the mantle. Orange glanced off teary yellow eyes. Blink. Cleared. Take a deep breath, darling. One paw traced, absentmindedly, the carved designs on the edge of a little letter-opener, sitting shrouded in a silken pocket. I’m glad you came. Three knocks, quickly, call upon the rounded wooden door. Sigh. Stand. It’s time. Here and now, remember? No turning back. One shot, only. One chance. Put on that show smile. Pour the tea. “I’m glad you came.” Empty words, hollow eyes. They don’t suspect a thing. Grab the porcelain, chipped as it is, from the kitchen cupboards. Pepper smoke, steaming tea. Welcome, friend. Quiet talk, shifting eyes. It’s all so painfully thin. The time, the tension—a wire that could be sliced with ease. Don’t wait much longer, darling, there are bags to pack yet. The cups are empty. Refills, offered, accepted. She stands and stretches. Her heart beats loudly. It's in her chest, in her throat. Darling, quickly. Paws move first to the pocket, then the table. It’s veiled a second longer, pressed coldly against the palm and wrist. And then it’s over. There’s blood on the floorboards, tears in her eyes. Gather the dishes, darling, pack the bags. Save your tears, darling, for when there’s time to cry. | ____________________ |
