Kohaku was once an apprentice shrine keeper, in training to become a proper priest so he could tend to the weary and grant blessings and boons to those who needed them. He enjoyed the work. It was peaceful, and in the far reaches of his home there were few things he needed to worry about beyond tending the grounds and being diligent in his studies.

But then the second half of his duties as a shrine priest became clear, and he found them far too much to handle.

For a shrine priest must not only tend to the needs of living travelers, but the spirits as well. They are meant to help guide them on their way to their final rest, though how this is done varies greatly from spirit to spirit as their reasons for staying to haunt Sorienth are as numerous as they are mysterious. Kohaku, finding he had an unfortunately strong link to the afterlife and the spirit realm, feared he would be dragged in and lost if he continued his studies, and so abandoned his shrine and teachers to flee in terror.

When he came across clan Sabrewing he had thought he had found safety; their liveliness would surely drive away any unwanted spirits, certainly? Apparently not, as his spectral follower Aero can attest.
