Pythoness
Pythoness of the Sky Gods

"This is an odd prison." Pythoness posed the statement, it lingered as an question she did not wish an answer for. "There are no bars, and the guards, they seem to protect us from the outside as if the entire world were your charge."

Clove met Rafae's eye first before returning his gaze to Pythoness.

"So tell me" Pythoness turned to face the pair of imperials. "Has the world fallen so fowl as to be ruled by the likes of lesser craft as yourself Rafae?"

"Ah, your memory, it appears to be returning." Rafae searched her face for a hint at any emotions that may hide behind her bored tone.

"How much time has passed then?"

"That depends, what do you last remember?"

She paused, her clouded eyes seemed to become even more unfocused. " I recall the great war, I was servant to the great Arcane Drakes of the western shore."

"The Drakes are no more."

This drew a repose, her eyes searching his for the purpose behind this wicked lie. "How?"

"Dragons, mostly, they drew the energy from what drakes remained after the great war. The husks that remain now are little but sad memory of a previous time."

A smirk then cackle. "A fitting end."

"Perhaps, and what about you? You who called upon powers beyond this realm. I see the time of dragons has worked it's wicked magic upon you as well."

"Dragons have no power over me."

"You called your power from beyond the dragon deities then?" Clove had been instructed to not ask questions but he had been playing guard to Pythoness for months now and was growing intolerant of the curiosity clawing at the back of his mind. Rafae looked mildly irritated but Clove pressed on.

"I know of dragons who draw energy from the deities, and those who draw energy from other living beings. While serving in the Stone Golem Regiment I heard stories from the past of dragons who wielded power from beyond this world. Those who sought energy from the cosmos."

Pythoness peered at him, a curious look.

"What beings are there beyond this world? I know of the shade, the energy that consumes all it touches, but that isn't a being who would grant power."

"Your correct, the shade is uncaring unthinking. There are those who consume the shade, harness it's raw power and utilize the destruction. Though all they can do is destroy."

"Shadeguards" Clove offered.

"You know of them do you?"

"Yes, I have met some."

Pythoness shook her head. "Imposters, the Shadeguard all fell to their lust for power. Foolish creatures that lot, empowered by light to think they could devouter the shade."

She looked into the middle distance. "Beautiful beings once, a race of light golden dragons. The more they consumed the more shade rotted their flesh and scales from the inside out. Tainting their hide with bruised marking. Unnatural, disgusting creatures."

"Did you know any?"

Pythoness considered this question. "Yes."

Clove pressed no farther. "I heard of your parents I think, great dragons who called upon a spirit beyond this realm. It is said they were able to yield the power of sight, among other gifts."

Pythoness watched him.

Clove pulled a tattered field notebook from his satchel. After fumbling through the pages he found a passage he seemed to be looking for and began to read. "Of the drakes there were none so feared, so powerful as the Arcane Drakes. Beings who could tap into magic beyond earthly bonds served the Arcane Drakes. Dragons who could see into the future, who could walk between times and even some who could visit the dreamscape. All tied their power by blood or training to the great Rust and Stardust."

Pythoness remained quite.

"I saw them once, I think. We were at war with Ice, I was part of a group who traveled to the southern ice flows."

"They are gone." Pythoness cut him off.

"Gone?"

Pythoness sneered. "Has time so erased our deeds as to have me fall upon def ears?"

"Yes" Rafae's voice was cold. "Time has passed, much of it, and the kind of power that was so common in our day has all but vanished. War has lay graves upon our battlegrounds and history. Few remain and those who do are shadows."

"Then why keep me alive? If our world has fallen and our power faded, why worry?"

Rafae didn't answer this, he looked older, tired. It was not the first time Clove had heard this response. 'Why cling to the past?', it was the theme of these living relics.

"Because your here, now. So why not?" Clove offered.

Rafae turned, he said nothing before leaving.

Clove watched him go, torn between following and staying. Finally he gave into his duty and followed Rafea. By the time he entered the hall the Imperial was gone, having turned down another corridor and out of sight. Clove remained in the doorway, his usual post.
