________ The door was closed, and as I put my claw on the handle, I felt afraid of what I might find.

It had been pouring rain for over a week. At first, I had blamed the radio silence from the rest of my clan at the horrid weather. After a couple of days, the once-soothing sound of raindrops gave way to a foreboding feeling deep within my soul. Why hadn’t anyone come out of their dens? A few more days passed in the eerie silence, punctuated by torrents of rain and the sound of wind whipping through the tree branches, but still no sign of any other dragon. I spent countless hours staring out of a cracked window in my den, waiting…. watching…

It took another two days before I managed to muster up the courage to brave the deluge and sprint to my nearest neighbor’s sanctum, my wings unfurled partially in a pathetic attempt to block out the steady flurry of raindrops. Finally, somewhat sheltered under the slim overhang above their doorway, I took a moment to gather myself before announcing my presence. I briefly surveyed the area, the feeling of apprehension growing in the pit of my stomach.

There was no sign of smoke rising from a roaring fireplace to keep a dragon warm in this chill.

The small flower plants sitting on the sill had wilted, their colors dull and dreary like the world outside.

In spite of the sinking feeling in my stomach, I applied a bit of pressure to the handle and felt a small bit of relief when the door smoothly swung open. Any sense of relief quickly faded and turned into dread as I quickly took stock of what was inside. The smell hit me first, musty and rotting. The kitchen table was overturned, glass and unidentifiable food and liquid, strewn across the center of the den. I choked back a gag, scrunching my nose as the abhorrent scent of decay and continued further into the den, searching for any sign of its inhabitant.

It was at the very back of the lair, partially hidden under a giant wolf’s pelt, that I found the dragon I was looking for, covered in lesions and pustules. My eyes watered, not just from the atrocious smell of a decaying corpse, but from the pain of seeing a loved one, once full of vitality reduced to.... well, this. Dead as a damned doornail, and from the looks of it they had been dead for at least a few days. Suddenly, the den seemed much too cramped for a dragon and I spun around and sprinted for the door and fresh air. Once back in the rain, I collapsed and vomited my measly lunch. No. No. NO. This couldn’t be. How? What? I had so many questions, and no answers. That thing in there looked nothing like my clanmate. Whatever disease they had contracted had eaten away at their scales, consumed their beauty, and left them to rot in darkness.

Summoning the last of my strength, I quickly bolted to the next lair. And the next. And the next. In each one, I stumbled upon the decomposing corpses on my friends. Each carcass was devastated with boils, and oozing a gruesome gray liquid. Once marvelous feathers and scales were now strewn amongst the nameless fluids and disheveled furniture. As I stood shivering in the rain outside of the last lair, I came to the realization that I was truly, absolutely alone in the encampment I grew up in. All the dragons who had raised me, sheltered me, taught me everything I know…. were now dead.

Sniffling, I managed to make my way back to my own lair. What food provisions I had left, I quickly stuffed into a sack, along with blankets, a knife, and anything else I could possibly use for survival. “What had happened to them?”, I pondered as I stuffed a compass and watch into the bag. “Why am I the only one left?” Thoughts swirled in my brain as I tied the bag closed and slung it over my shoulder, careful to make sure it was positioned in a way that wouldn’t hinder my movements. As I passed my table, I saw the little wooden unicorn given to me by one of the clan elders when I was a peanut. I scowled for a moment, but my hesitation was short-lived. These dragons had been my friends, my family. I snatched it off the table and quickly stuffed it into the pocket of my coat and headed out the door.

The rain had receded into a fine mist as I took flight. I was a true Wind dragon and it wasn’t long before I left the compound far behind me. The distance between me and what was now a speck on the horizon grew with every beat of my powerful wings. As I looked down at the blanket of thick fog that had settled across the Zephyr Steppes, a thought struck me...

What if I were the cause of their demise?

What if I had been the… Contagion?
