Nexus

At first glance, Nexus looks like a pompous dragon, and most wouldn't blame you if you instantly thought he was. Because he is. He is often overbearing and has such a high sense of self-importance, many dragons have taken to joking among themselves that you couldn't see his ego because it's so high up. Indeed, he likes to think of himself as a very important dragon, what with his researching not just the history of the clan, but of the whole world (the focus of his research extending to what he calls the First Civilization, but it also stretches back to the creation of the world), and is very attentive to whatever goes in inside the clan. If anything, anything, be it exaltation, a call to serve under the gods, the hatching of a clutch, even what would seem to be petty drama, happens within the clan, you can count on Nexus to be there to record it.

Because the job of scribe requires it, Nexus is known to be quite an observant dragon. He uses not only his eyes, but his ears, and even his nose to sniff something out. He is especially attentive to any gossip, fake or real. Because of this, he's earned a bit of a reputation for being a huge gossip, and, because he always knows what's up within the clan, many go to him for any 'news of the day'. Of course, he denies ever being a gossiper, claiming that he only seeks it out to put it into paper, and he doesn't even believe most of it (or so he says, anyway), so quit saying he's a gossiper! What he won't ever admit, not even to himself, is that gossiping is something of a guilty pleasure of his. The fact that he's a scribe is a cheap excuse to look it out; what he really wants is to hear the juicy secrets of dragons, and he especially loves to give his opinion of it.

Speaking of which, Nexus is something of a very opinionated dragon. He not only has dogmatic tendencies, but he also voices his opinion every chance he gets. And his voice is loud. He's arrogant, too, and don't be surprised if he suddenly changes his demeanor to something more patronizing. He thinks he knows everything, even more so than Zahira (who is far more studious than him and humble; the difference between the two is night and day). His arrogance only increased when he mated with Vita (though everyone claims it was more of a one-time thing that resulted in the hatching of four hatchlings, of which only one of them survived), and his self-importance increased with him being added to the Royal Family ("Only by marriage!" most say, even Scylla herself).

Many wonder what Vita ever saw in this dragon, though everyone thoroughly understands why the two didn't last. Everyone wondered how he could have such a humble (even shy), sensitive and reasonable daughter. In fact, it is safe to say that Nexus is one of the clan's most obnoxious dragons, right next to Siorus.

While Nexus is indeed one of the most observant dragons in the clan, he is completely oblivious when it comes to his family (or more specifically, his daughter). Yes, he's one of those drakes. When Vita had only just announced that she and Nexus were expecting another clutch, everyone thought the coming of these hatchlings would smooth him down. Everyone expected fatherhood to humble him, if at least a little bit. Absolutely no improvement happened. He didn't leave the hatchlings (the fact that he's still around shows as much), but he didn't really interact with his children, though he was there when his two sons, Caz and Jonah, lay dying, and nearly wept with pride when Pax was called to serve the Shadowbinder. Before they hatched, Nexus bragged about having hatchlings under way, and not just with any female but with Queen Vita to boot. When they hatched, his bragging changed from mating with the leader to having three strapping young lads as his blood (he ignored Scylla's existence for the most part). He spent most of his time with his sons, and left Scylla in Vita's care (and, with how busy she is, she was mostly cared for by Rubex, though Vita did spend time with her as much as she could). He was devastated when two of his sons were struck down by the Beastclans.

With his sons gone, he practically disappeared from Scylla's life. Beforehand, she managed to spend microseconds of her time with her father when he came to pick up her brothers to do whatever Nexus had planned for the day. Mostly they consisted of her greeting him with a "Good morning/day/evening, father," which were answered with either a grunt or a polite "good morning to you too." Throughout her childhood, Nexus remained oblivious to her misery out of not knowing him and his blatant preference for her brothers. It was a hurt that not even Rubex, with all his care (for he grew to love her as if she were his), managed to mend. Currently, both he and Scylla share a practically non-existent relationship; it's as if they had never met one another, as if he wasn't the one who sired her. Scylla pushes him away whenever he gets near, and grows mysteriously deaf when he speaks to her. It's not as if Nexus even tries to fix the rift that he himself caused; he is more than happy to renounce his paternal responsibilities to Scylla. Indeed, everyone says that he doesn't much care for her, even spreading rumors that he would prefer that she were a drake, or had never been hatched at all (conveniently, a rumor he ignores). However, it's not that he doesn't care for Scylla, he does, in a strange way, it's just that he preferred her brothers more.

Though he was very well a terrible father to Scylla, no one can deny the devotion and love he showed towards Caz, Jonah and Pax, and everyone can't help but notice that, even though he and Vita are no longer mates and therefore, no longer obligated to one another, he hasn't taken a new mate. And for what it's worth, he is a great scribe, his writings are very detailed and precise, and his research isn't half bad either. He takes his job seriously and he doesn't conjure up theories out of thin air; he values ancient relics and studies them with care. He's acts less a Shadow dragon and more like a Light dragon, and he is fairly smart. He's an obnoxious being, no one in the clan will contest that, but he has his redeeming qualities. It's just that his flaws are a bit more obvious than his strengths.
