Ill-Fated
"Trinket is dead."The words of the grim news the king had brought still rang distantly in Lute's mind. Though that day was long gone now, the emotional scar still stung as if it had just been the day before. He was alone in his room, the marble halls of the clan's lair quiet with a mourning silence that day. It wasn't often that dragons in the clan were killed, most moved away to serve the Lightweaver, or were sent away. The gold ridgeback sat in soundless depression on his bed of silk, the identical one parallel to his seemed dusty and limp now, as if no one has used it in ages. He brought a claw up to his head and rested his temples on them, and single tear running down his long snout. It should have been me. Lute wished that he's been in Trinket's place, that he had died instead of her, but it was more than desire that brought on such a thought. Somewhere deep in his soul, Lute had a feeling that whatever had caused Trinket's death had been meant for him. Only a few days prior to his sister's death, the Enlightener had received a letter from someone who claimed to be a druid from the Viridian Labyrinth requesting his presence up at The Behemoth. At the time Lute had been busy helping the monarchs find an ambassador for the clan to represent the Shadow Flight. It so happened that one that day, Trinket had departed for the Nature Domain to visit a few close friends. After a few days the ridgeback had gotten around to preparing to meet up with the druid, but he never expected to receive news that his sister was dead the morning he had planned to depart. Her body was found on the border between the Everbloom Gardens and the Shrieking Wilds. What was strange was there was no sign of the cause of her death. No injuries nor poisons. Trinket had been buried in the Nature Domain respectfully, the druids wishing her a safe journey to the other side. Perhaps the strangest part was when Lute had finally worked himself up to go see if he could meet that druid, there was not a trace of them at the location they described. Not even the other druids knew of anyone who had been expecting or waiting on him. It was almost as if it had all been a ruse. A flicker of strange darkness passed over Lute's vision as he lay on his bed, followed by faint glimmers. Dread washed over the Enlightener. Whatever was going on, it wasn't over yet. ________________________________________ |
