Biography
|Selendrile may not be known for his wits, and his knowledge of books and spells isn't quite what you would expect, but.. |
|Where wits may be lacking, his heart is strong. He's more than brawn, but a loyal and well meaning friend who's just as likely to fight as to let hatchlings crawl all over his hulking form. His loyalty to his charge and his pack is beyond anyone's expectations of the brute. |

Hard Truths
_“The truth may be hard to stomach at times, but it's better than living in the false comfort of a lie."
__Unlovable. Plain.. Boring. Since hatching, Selendrile had never been one of the pretty ones. He was easily looked over, deemed as just… average. Less than average. Homely. As a hatchling he was small and weak, often sick as he went unnoticed when it came to feeding time. Soon he began to realize that without having the benefit of catching another’s eye, he would be alone forever. So he fought for what he wanted.
__Dinnertime began to be a war for the small hatchling. Lashing out became the norm, until he had every scrap he could manage. Others had to ask him to share rather than pushing him to the side. Only through sheer willpower did he become the strongest of his brood. His siblings didn’t stand a chance against the larger and angrier Guardian. It made him feel powerful.
__Unlovable. Plain. Cruel. Others tried to stand up to Selendrile and bully him, as they had before. Soon they realized that he was not one to be trifled with. He would claw and bite if it would get him out on top. His teeth were sharp from the bones he chewed and his claws from daily maintenance. He didn’t need a weapon. He made himself a weapon.
__It wasn’t long until the others began to fear and shun him, moving away and cowering when he came into sight. Powerful and strong… feared and respected. He wouldn’t trade it for anything. Not even a friend. He didn’t know the meaning of a friend. None had done anything but betray him before, so he shrugged off the feelings of loneliness and shouldered past those who were brave enough not to tremble.
__Unlovable. Ugly. Merciless… Eventually Selendrile was asked to leave his clan. The leader was insistent that he find somewhere else to live. What had the potential to be an honored warrior had become the enemy within their ranks. So he left, and for once the Guardian was unsure of what to do or where to go. So he simply wandered, looking for a new home. Perhaps living alone was the best he could do for himself… but then… he was tired.
__Eventually the young dragon found himself collapsing in exhaustion near a clearing. It was clearly inhabited, and within moments there was a Mirror practically crawling over every inch of him and asking him endless questions. He was no more than a pest to Selendrile, one to be slapped away, but no matter how many times he snarled and bit, the Mirror just came back.
_“Exhausted.. That’s what you are. You’re welcome here, you know. Besides… you’re a great warrior. We could use a friend like you.” His voice was hissing and weird, but the other didn’t seem to take no for an answer. Wraith was his name, and he came to realize that he was the leader of this clan. When Selendrile looked around, he saw misfits and wanderers from all different walks of life. Dragons just like him smiled from afar.
__Unlovable… Ugly… Loner… He’d gone so long pushing others away that the thought of being wanted made his chest ache and his throat tighten. How? Why? He was perfectly comfortable and safe being by himself. Others caring for him meant danger. Danger to them and to himself… he couldn’t risk accepting love… Could he?
__His anger and resentment, and those cruel, harsh ideals he’d grown up with had formed a shield of thorns around his being, hiding what was deep inside. Fear overwhelmed him at the prospect of letting others in and actually interacting without malice. Confusion flooded his mind, and the numbness of being alone shattered, releasing a flood of emotions he never really thought he had.
_“You’re a good and kind dragon. I can tell. Stay with us? Be part of our family?” questioned the small Mirror.
_“Everything Selendrile had known… all of it was a lie. He was capable of being cared for by and caring for others. He wasn’t a terrible and unredeemable dragon. It hurt to know that life hadn’t been right in the past… but he was okay with that. He was home now. He was loved.
