[ Manitou ]
| Rank: M?? |
Astronomer
Coral Basilisk Field Notes

┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Ever since he was a hatchling, Manitou had been a stargazer. He remembered vividly fighting to stay awake on cold nights, while his brothers and sisters slumbered peacefully beside him in the nest, warm under their mother’s protective wing. The little Tundra would peer out from under her wing and look up at the sea of stars swimming in inky black above him for hours, transfixed. As he grew older, he gained a voracious appetite for knowledge, striving to learn everything he could about that mysterious nighttime expanse. It wasn’t long before Manitou had exhausted his birthclan’s library of astronomy scrolls. He committed each constellation, each comet, each planet to memory, reading the night sky like a map to an unknown world, full of possibility.

Perhaps his devotion to the stars was a form of escape as well. The more time he spent honing his eyesight to revel in the night sky, the more he could forget his complete lack of hearing. Manitou had been born deaf, but he had quickly latched onto an obsession that never once required something of him he could not give. While during the day he had to constantly fight to communicate, to maintain an awareness of his surroundings, to try and fit in in clan life, at night, he was truly free, truly whole. The stars had no need to be heard. It was as if they were made for him. As if they looked down on him from above, whispering we see you, you see us. That is enough.

Eventually, Manitou’s knowledge of the starry heavens expanded beyond his clan’s capacity, seeking new information, pushing him to make new discoveries. So, the Tundra decided to embark on a journey across Sorneith, to view the cosmos in every season, from every corner of the globe, to learn as much as he could from that endless expanse.

He fully expected to live a nomadic life for the rest of his days, lost in his own world, a world of night and possibilities and endless discovery. But as the years passed, Manitou began to realize that those burning beacons so far away from him could never replace the companionship he lacked on the earth below. While his passion for astronomy had not faded, he now desired other things. Namely, the company of other dragons. The kind of community that would appreciate his knowledge and capabilities and not simply see him for his physical limitation.

During his travels, he had stayed with many clans and had even made a few tentative companions, but then, after a few months, he would move on. Old ties would be severed and new ones would have to be remade, again and again. The price of his quest for knowledge, he supposed. But maybe, just maybe, it didn’t have to be that way. Maybe there was some way he could have both…

It was around this time that Manitou met a strange little Fae wandering through the Viridian Labyrinth. She would watch him from a distance as he scribbled in his notebook and spent hours studying the world above. Finally, one night, she approached tentatively. Her skin was black as night and a mischievous grin seemed permanently etched onto her face. Manitou did his best to read her lips, but since she blended in perfectly to the darkness surrounding her, he eventually held out a parchment and quill. Luckily, Tempestuous got the idea rather quickly, and scribbled a greeting, that smirk still plastered to her face.

For the next few weeks, Tempestuous would visit him at night every once and a while. He suspected that part of this was her duty as a nocturnal scout for her clan, given that he was a strange dragon close to their territory, but he could also tell that she was highly curious, and would often scan the pages of his notebook with a critical eye when she thought his attention was focused above.

In time, the two developed an easy friendship, and one day, Tempestuous finally deemed him worthy of meeting the clan she had written so much about. Although he was nervous, he had no need to be, and after meeting with KucKuc who carefully explained the clan’s structure and values, Manitou felt certain that this was where he was meant to be. The matriarch nodded in agreement. They had come to an understanding of one another that required no words to be expressed or exchanged, and from that day forward, Manitou was a permanent member of the clan.
