The Seeker

Astraeus’ greatest dream is to find his pearl.

Wait, what about that one he’s got? Right there in his grasp — Sh! Come closer. That one’s not his; whose? That’s anyone’s guess. No one can figure out how it happened, but from Astraeus’ earliest memory, he has always known he had the wrong pearl. When his parents first found him rejecting it, they thought he must have swapped his with one of his siblings’ — but none of them felt the same instinctive aversion to their little orbs.

Anyone else might have dismissed the young hatchling’s feelings as childish fancy, and certainly Astraeus’ skydancer father was tempted to at first, but the depth of Astraeus’ distress convinced his parents otherwise. He refused to carry the pearl with him for months (to his pearlcatcher mother’s great consternation), and it was even longer before he began to tend to it as other pearlcatchers maintained their own. As the first new layer of the pearl, slathered unevenly, was curing, the young Astraeus had wailed to his mother, “That’s not my egg — now I know it for sure!”

In the years hence, the pearl in Astraeus’ possession has grown nevertheless. Each layer is applied with a turbulent combination of apologetic hesitance, pain-staking attentiveness, and trepidatious hope. Astraeus’ greatest dream is to find his pearl — and his greatest hope, to find the pearlcatcher who has his pearl, who must also be the true owner of the pearl in Astraeus' care.

This latter, monumentally unfounded presumption was first suggested to him by his mother. In her attempt to soothe her fearful son, she had given him a fairytale: perhaps it was fate that had exchanged Astraeus' pearl with another pearlcatcher's, who must surely be kind and loving and is gently cherishing the pearl that is not their own. Someday Astraeus will meet them, and they will exchange the manifestations of their years, wrapped around the kernel of the other's earliest and long-lost essence, and they would live happily ever after, knowing and possessing each other as no two other pearlcatchers ever had before. The allure of this fantasy continues to drive Astraeus in his travels far and wide in search of this mythical other, and in his devoted, near-reverent maintenance of the other's pearl.

Astraeus, now an adult, is very aware that it is a fantasy. Most nights, he wishes he could forget that. Astraeus' greatest fear is that his pearl is in any other situation. With another dragon, but not a pearlcatcher? They wouldn't understand what it means to him, and they wouldn't be able to grow it. Perhaps they might use it for games; perhaps it's been broken in such a game a long time ago. Not with a dragon at all? The Beastclans would probably understand even less how important a pearl is - if they recognised it at all! Languishing forgotten, at the bottom of a deep lake or crevasse? How would he ever find it! But worst of all — perhaps it has been consumed by the Shade? No, he would have known, he would have felt it... right? And somewhere, another pearlcatcher with no pearl to even pass off as their own, shunned by others of their kind, wandering lonely and embittered... No, far better if the fairytale were true! Until the day that it comes to pass, Astraeus will keep flying far and wide, searching, and searching, and searching...
