Quinten

The Sage
Patriarch, Co-dean of Equinox College, Core Council

Timid - Serious - Reflective

Quinten hailed from a prehistoric and hierarchical Light Clan called the Amber Paradise. Paradise is perhaps the most misleading name for his previous clan - it was one of the most hierarchical, insular, dystopian lairs in the earliest history of the Light Flight, ruled by a court of Imperials and discriminatory by breed. The Amber Paradise was so named because the Faes, the designated lowest species, were the laborers responsible for creating a massive city made out of amber, designed by the Pearlcatchers of the middle class.

Born a Fae and the fifth of a clutch of five, Quinten would have had little chance to gain rank, and thus had to carry out one of the Amber Paradise's most reviled jobs - dealing with outsiders. The pivotal day of his life came when he had to deal with a furious Guardian who was determined to confront a Lightning ambassador Ridgeback for his borrowing of parts of her Charge.

Appassionata's pacing and bellowing made visible cracks in the City's foundation and shook it to its core. When she saw that she'd almost singlehandedly collapsed part of the City, located above the nurseries, she departed without the stolen materials. Quinten left Paradise to follow the Guardian who would rather live in shame for deserting her charge than risk the lives of hatchlings.

Shortly thereafter, Paradise fell.

It is uncertain what was the finishing blow, but an ancient legend mentions that the clan that builds in the Hewn City must take care to build only with the blessing of the Weaver, else a Shadow darker than Shadow claims them. A few crumbled spires and sculptures are all that remain of Paradise... at least above ground. No one that remembers Paradise - and there are only a few scholars in the whole of the Sunbeam Ruins that know of or remember the amber city - knows just how much of the amber ruins remain below the Hewn City, waiting to be found.

Quinten returned to Paradise's ruins to find his home collapsed and family gone, with only a scroll remaining in the sparse quarters of his family. His parents had scrimped and saved to be able to afford a breed change scroll, the one chance of social mobility in the Amber Paradise. He'd only intended to bring it back to his new home with Appassionata; Quinten had no idea opening it would release the magic within.

In his new body, there were some things he wasn't adjusted to, including the instinctual care over the pearl that all natural-born Pearlcatchers possess. Quinten and Appassionata soon discovered that the temple that would become their home still harbored a fragment of the Shade deep within it. When it attacked Appassionata, she would have died but for Quinten - but he dove into battle without taking his pearl-harness off. The pearl was smashed in the battle and he gained his leg scars, which have never faded, remain dark to this day, and still sometimes pain him. For a long time he remained in seclusion, barely coming out to socialize with the newly budding clan - as a Pearlcatcher without a pearl, he felt like he'd lost a part of himself.

During the second annual Brightshine Jubilee, he made a pilgrimage to the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, where the Lightweaver granted him a spark of light to be the seed of another pearl. He wears the Sunchaser's Jewelry in gratitude and devotion, and almost never takes it off. Since then, he has become slightly more involved in the life of Clan Halidom. The title of Patriarch carries with it no formal authority; nevertheless, he is greatly respected as the chief adviser (and mate) of Clan Leader Appassionata. His authority in the clan comes from his co-leadership of Equinox College, the Clan's library, educational, and research facilities. Quinten documents Shade infestations like the one he lost his pearl to so long ago, and is currently looking into Shade-touched dragons and Shade-touched wounds, like his own.
