Not again.
"Prince Aquarius?" A small female guardian was peering at him strangely. "What are you doing down there?"
It was Princess Nyendra. The only dragoness he despised more than his mother, who was making him marry Nye.
Why. WHY. She was so mean to his brothers. Not to mention the fact that she seemed to like him way too much. She was also super boring. Nye only talked about her pink scales or her shiny things back at her palace in the Bay of One Thousand Scales. He'd run off from yet another royal dinner between their parents, into his father's study. Aqua had then crawled underneath King Hinei's oakwood desk, hoping not to be found. He'd been there for less than ten minutes before the princess of One Thousand Scales had found him.
"Ummm.... sitting...here?" Aqua looked at his talons. Please don't ask-
Nye grinned. "Shall we go sit somewhere else? Like... the royal garden? It's very romantic there." Her bright blue eyes sparkled in the light of the setting sun. Oh, by the Tidelord. Plaguebringer's Effegies. His parents would be so disappointed if he turned down his future mate.
"I suppose."
Several long, boring hours later, Aquarius had walked Princess Nye back to Wingwater Palace, then launched into the sky. He always felt better when flying. Soon, he landed at the end of his parents' territory, where the Tangled Wood began. Finally. Quiet. He barely had the chance to take a deep breath before he heard rustling in the trees. He hissed, baring his teeth. A young dragoness emerged, and Aquarius gasped. The Fae dragon was beautiful. Deep red wings and scales that were almost the exact shade as his.
She's much more beautiful than Nye. Aqua waited a moment, cleared his throat, and started towards her.
He stared at the egg. "Where- where did you get that?"
Dusk cradled it to her chest. "It was a single egg in a nest. The mother was dead beside it, Aqua. I couldn't just walk away."
He blinked. "What are we gonna do?" They would keep it, for sure. But neither of them knew the first thing about raising a hatchling.
She shrugged. "We're going to have to play it by ear, I suppose." Small cracks were already covering the egg's surface, but whoever was inside didn't show any interest in hatching anytime soon.
