though it is no longer required of him,
anathema wanders the woods,
searching for souls to save and protect.

the only thing he ever asks in return is
whether they know his true name,
the one he was made to forget when banished to this realm.

no one does.
but that's okay.
they still deserve salvation and comfort.

Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?

shadows linger, somehow cutting through the ever-looming darkness. no light pierces through the thick canopy overhead. instead of sunlight, glowing mushrooms provide just enough light by which to see.

a shape moves through the darkness, passing over a cluster of mushrooms. reds fade into deep blues, and faux eyes seem to watch the world from feathered wings. the shape pauses at the cluster, gazing at it with a sort of longing in its blue blue eyes, before it continues on.

the shape – a dragon – pauses just before a clearing, tilting their head. a distant sound breezes past, barely audible.

“Help! Someone please help me!”

the feathers along the dragon’s ears shift and tilt before they hone in on the sound. with a great flap of their wings, the dragon alights off the ground.

they weave in and out of the trees with ease, never coming within a foot of the low-hanging branches. every once in a while they adjust their course, angling themselves slightly one way or another.

eventually they come to a stop in front of another clearing. a guardian paces the area, desperate panic written across their coal-black visage.

“are you lost?” the dragon asks, voice low and undoubtedly male. the guardian whips around, nearly tripping over their own feet.

“Yes!” they exclaim, fear and relief intermingling within their voice. “I was just trying to get home, but I ended up in the Foxfire Bramble and can’t find my way out!” their voice rises to a desperate whine at the end.

the dragon smiles, a kind, gentle thing.

“i can get you out of here,” he offers. “i know these woods, far too well.”

the guardian gazes at him like he just offered them a place by the Shadowbinder’s side. “You can?” they breathe. he nods.

“yes,” he says. “i only ask of one thing in return.”

“Anything.”

the dragon takes a deep breath, holds it for a moment. lets it out.

“do you know my true name?”

the guardian stares at him, confusion marring their face. “No,” they say, and the hope in their voice has been replaced with fear.

but they needn’t worry, for the dragon only smiles, a bittersweet thing.

“that is alright,” he says. “neither do i.”
