A clan looks after its own. That was what he was taught as a child, and for most of his early life, it was true. He hatched in a Light clan, one that had attracted a number of Lightning scientists to their ranks. The lair was a hive of activity and noise, including the occasional explosion. Yetora was forever running with the clan’s other youngsters. It had been cute when they’d been younger, but now that they were adolescents, their elders’ tolerance was wearing thin. “Watch it!” a chemist barked. As Yetora raced past, he bumped into the table, and a beaker tipped over, spilling viscous fluid onto the floor. Yetora stepped right into it. His feet slid out from under him, and he collided with another table. More beakers smashed upon the floor. A bunsen burner toppled down, and the chemist shrieked in terror. It would be the last thing Yetora would ever hear.

Volatile substances all mixing together...and the flame had ignited the mess. It had resulted in a conflagration that’d seriously injured a number of dragons. As for Yetora... “Your hearing will come back,” the healer scribbled on a notepad. “Give it time.” Days turned into weeks...yet Yetora remained stone-deaf. It was probably just as well. There were angry glances thrown in his direction, mutters that he was more trouble than he was worth. After long months of treatment, his clan turned him away. He was told to leave the lair, make his own way in the world. Yetora was stunned — this was the only home he had ever known. How would he survive out there? Yet survive he did. Initially, many dragons took pity on him because of his deafness. He was offered food and safe places to stay. Although Yetora didn’t stay long at these clans, he always did his best to leave a good impression on them — his former clanmates’ accusing glares remained firmly etched on his mind. So he worked and learned when he could, and he began to pick up various skills. He learned the signs he needed to communicate, to read jaw movements and body language. For a lone traveler such as himself, his sixth sense was particularly important, and several times he managed to avoid a danger that would have injured or killed him. It was while wandering that he met Caelyn — another Skydancer, but much more refined and smartly dressed. Without any greeting, Caelyn fluttered down to Yetora’s side and asked, “Where might you be headed, friend?” Yetora smiled cheerily. He paused to sign to Caelyn. The other Skydancer frowned. “I don’t understand that. Hmmmm...I guess I’ll just walk with you a little while, hey?” They were approaching a clan Yetora had stayed at before. Caelyn watched as the dragons warmly welcomed this deaf, shabbily-dressed vagrant. They gave him food and water and pressed travel supplies upon him. The two Skydancers left the lair in significantly better spirits than when they’d arrived, especially Caelyn — he’d made up his mind to accompany Yetora. He’d seen the advantages of traveling with such an inoffensive character...but strangely enough, the odd jobs Yetora had done to repay others’ kindness had slipped past him.

“It’s late. Better find a place to stay. Maybe that lair over there?” Caelyn signed one day. He’d learned the gestures needed to communicate with his “brother” — a label he’d adopted for convenience as much as for the sympathy it engendered. Many dragons became markedly friendlier when they heard that he was helping his poor, deaf “brother” travel round the world. Yetora nodded eagerly back. As far as he knew, he’d acquired a loyal friend, and perhaps being banished wasn’t so bad after all. It was an adventurous life and he was free to go where he pleased.... The clan guards gestured approvingly. As Yetora stepped forward to greet them, he wondered how he might repay this clan for their kindness, as he’d helped other clans before. He had become particularly adept at sensing danger. Perhaps here, he could put those skills to greater use. After all, a clan looks after its own. |
