Biography

The rich take everything for granted. They are disgusting, vile creatures that call themselves dragons as they mock and jeer the less fortunate. Dragons would marry out of desperation into rich families, giving up their hopes and freedoms for a meal every night. Their cries of lamentation could be heard in the castles and towers, their hearts heavy with the grief of everything that could have been. You could tell who the “fortunate” were: they flooded the markets like a plague of locusts, their fine silks and jewelry winking at every beggar in the fading light. Their heads were high and their noses higher; they reeked of pride and pompous foolery. The rich only spared you a glance if you got in their way. The condescending look given to you would make the most innocent child feel worthless. Autumnus hated them all. They were the reason he was poor. They were the reason why many of his friends went hungry every night. They took everything.

And he was going to take it back.

"Keep your chin up, someday there will be happiness again. You'll see.
–Robin Hood

“Robin Hood”

Everything was quiet. The steady thumping of his heart and the plume of breath from his mouth was the only indication of life in the frozen forest. A slight breeze picked up, resulting in a muffled shiver from the hidden figure. He had waited for the carriage to drive by since dawn, virtually motionless for the early-morning hours of impatient waiting. He stretched his aching muscles; staying in one position for so long made his legs and lower back ache.

His head snapped up at the sound of crunching leaves and permafrost. Rounding the corner was the carriage and the prize he sought after. Guards, heavily armed and noisily marching protected the carrier on all sides. This was going to be more difficult than he first imagined. Without a word, he edged farther out on the branch and aimed his bow. THUNK. The impact resonated off the sleeping trees as he positioned his bow above the makeshift zip line, waiting for the perfect moment. Stepping off the branch and swinging his legs forward, he sailed through the air and landed quietly on the roof of the carriage without alerting the driver or entourage. Taking out his dagger, he quickly sliced the roof and slipped into the darkness.

He heard a startled yelp. Autumnus dove for the passenger, the dagger digging into his throat. He himself hid his face in the shadows, trying to protect his identity while threatening the passenger’s life. “Where is the gold?” He growled menacingly. The passenger just shook his head and gagged as Autumnal pushed the dagger harder. “One last time,” he whispered in his ear. He paused for a moment. The fae was large for his species, the wealth showing in the dragon’s girth. His eyes snapped back upwards when the fae tried to speak. “With your eyes. Show me where the gold is.” The dragon glanced slightly to the right to the doorway, then back at him. Autumnus lowered the knife slowly. “You move and I’ll end you.”

Autumnus edged towards the door, dragging the blade’s edge across the surface until it hooked on something. Gingerly he bent down and opened the hidden compartment, revealing two burlap sacks of coin. He glanced over his shoulder at the now smirking nobledragon. They both knew he couldn’t hold both bags and a weapon at once. He hoisted the bags over his shoulders and tried for a smile. “Should I just kill you now, or will you show me that famous nobledragon courtesy and allow me a head start first?”

“I don’t negotiate with thieves.” The fae fanned his crests outward and tilted his head back. “BANDIT! THERE’S A BANDIT IN THE CARRIAGE!”

~*~

He ran through the forest, the quiet crinkling of red and burgundy leaves the only hint he was ever there. He leapt over a fungus-ridden log and crouched, panting, against the rough side. He scrabbled at the semi-frozen ground to create a small ditch for him to hide in. The sound of wingbeats only added to his frantic digging until he finally could flatten himself and wriggle under the log. Only a moment later did the sound of a heavily armored guard land with a muffled thud on the forest floor. Silence blanketed the clearing; the forest seemed to sense the intruder, watching with quiet observation. He held his breath as the dragon sniffed the air and growled. He knew the guard could smell him and hoped the pungent smell of the fungi would mask him enough. He shifted his position that crinkled the leaves around him, seemingly deafening in the thick quiet. The guard’s head snapped around, scanning the clearing with renewed suspicion. He unsheathed his sword and dragged it along the ground, creating a groove in its wake. Autumnus could see him perfectly now; if the guard looked slightly to his left, Autumnus was as good as dead. Thinking fast, he produced an acorn out of one of his pockets and threw it into the bushes. The guard started at the sudden noise and raised his sword. “He went this way!” The shout pierced through the canopy of the forest and sent birds taking to the skies. The dragon gave one more look around before taking off through the copse of trees with three more guards trailing after him. Autumnus waited there in his cold hollow for a long time, waiting to see if they would double back. Inching out of his clever hiding spot, he looked around one last time. He smiled and hoisted up the sack full of the queen’s gold - the people’s taxes. “Long live the queen.” He laughed as he threw the heavy load over his shoulder. His people wouldn’t go hungry tonight.

It was too dangerous for him to live in the village; stealing a miniature fortune from Her Majesty has its disadvantages...of course it was the peasant’s hard-earned money and savings, but who was keeping track? He rolled his eyes as he dropped the sack of gold on the mayor’s doorstep. He knocked loudly and spoke in a rough voice. “Special delivery. Hide it better this time.” He didn’t even bother to look back, knowing the weak spiral cowering behind the doorway would make promises he wasn’t sure he could keep. Weak dragons shouldn’t be leaders, and the Queen used that to Her advantage.

Many already knew where and who he was. The terrible bandit “Robin Hood,” named for his agility and craftiness (and annoyance) in the forest like the common robin, was only a young dragon who slept in the trees. Him. The town allowed him to live in secret above their heads as long as he and his Freedom Fighters returned their gold and kept their hatchlings safe from the King’s Men. Many called it helpful thievery. He preferred to call it “off-the-books commerce.” It was a quiet exchange, where he would find a pie, an apple or two, and some margarine and bread at the base of his tree for all his troubles. The local guards believed the townsfolk were worshipping the tree as a local deity and never questioned it, much to everyone’s amusement. Today someone was kind enough to leave tarts for him and his friends. He whistled as he climbed.
