Backstory

Pops always told me that this world's money revolves around a good scam. And if you want to survive here, you need cash on your person. No, I don't think I believe that. Dragons get their dosh through honest means all the time. And there are easy ways to make a living without having to have a single bit of treasure on hand.
The family business was simple. A basic casino with what you'd normally expect inside was run by this group of imperials deadset on scamming out the customers. Now usually they'd be disoriented enough not to notice the weighted die or rigged card hands, and if they weren't then pops would pull out his tricks that confuse even me. We reeled in a fortune through all that jazz, and neither me nor my siblings ever really questioned it. Mum was partially against this, but as long as it paid the services I suppose she was happy. And since both of them were satisfied, I was too for a little bit of time.
Pops always wanted me to be the one to carry us on, as his only son. The others like Umbra were his girls, and they helped out running the bar and whatnot. He wanted me to be the one with the tricks up his sleeve, the chip off the old block. So, he taught me every trick in the book of a thousand pages. As I child I just absorbed all that up like it was nothing out of the ordinary. As of now around half of those tricks are lost in my desire to forget them, but some are still up there and I just don't use them. Afsi always wants me to show her, but I really don't want to, either because she'll want me to explain it (takes wayyy to long) or she's gonna try to figure them out herself, and honestly that's gonna end bad because so many things are hidden from even my eyes and can only be seen by some other kind of optical.
One day I was serving out cards for a game of poker. Game got finished, client pulled me over for a chat. Usually when they do that, it's for bribes to rig the game in their favor. But this dragon thought different.
"Hey kid, you're one of Maindo's, eh? You ever think about not being a conner?"
This casino's reputation never included cheating out the customers. Pops was always careful not to leak a word out by either a bribe or a threat by claw. "I don't think I understand what you mean by cheat, sir. We are a respectable business and I don't see what you do. Please sir, elaborate?"
"Oh kid, I'm a professional gambler myself. Ain't a use in tryna hide it. But don't worry 'bout me,
I got little bit o' dosh from yer dad not to tell up. But ehh, kinda regretting the fact that I chose this lifestyle, but it's a bit late to go back."
"Sir, I don't think I understand. Are you not happy with your money?"
"Yeah, but consequences are really biting me in the tail after all these cycles. Runnin' from exalted denizen coppers, tryna get customers in a business reveled for lies, bounty on some head like mine. Sure I get money, but I also get cycles of unpaid jail time. I do this long enough and Icewarden's gonna be all up in my business. There's no way for me t' stop eitha. I dunno how to do anythin' else, n' if I try to reform m'self dragons are gonna think I'm tryna scam them in a diff'rent business! It's a vicious cycle. Kid, don't be like me. Save yerself before it's too late."
His words stuck with me in my time in the casino, and they still stick with me now. Every day I do something new, I think about his whole predicament and how I don't want to end up like him. I told Mum about it too, but she said that as long as we kept the casino in good reputation, we would be fine. But something deep inside me said that this dragon belonged to a family not unlike ours, and his demise was still one of a runaway.
The dragon in question was a regular at our casino, scoring a lot of money for himself, and for the casino. Pops liked talking to him has a customer, as they had a lot of things in common. Eventually he just stopped coming, and I knew enough at the time to know what had happened. Both him and I thought he'd never end up a popsicle in the Southern Icefield, but I suppose that we were both wrong.
One day this blue skydancer came into the casino, and she looked like a dragon who kept her wits about her. Pops knew skydancers' abilities of mood reading well, and taught me that the best way to trick them is to think of something else over the current event, which I had mastered at this point. I stuck in my head a memory of my first birthday, when my father gave me my first set of cards and I felt happy. "Good evening madam, welcome to our casino. Can I help you with anything?"
"Yes. Do you know where whoever runs this casino may be?"
I could not see her eyes under the brim of her fedora, so I could not see if her element could potentially allude to an issue with the casino. I didn't take my chances nonetheless. "Unfortunately, you caught him while he wasn't here. He's out gathering staff to help us right now, madam."
She looked convinced of my truth after her antennae twitched slightly. "Yes, it is unfortunate. Do you know when he'll be back?"
"The boss' schedule is to himself only, I am sorry to say. You can speak to one of his closest if you wish."
"Do you know where his son is?"
"I am his son, madam."
"Hmph. Are you aware that your father is a cheat of his customers?" I could only help but to put myself into the memory of when my father explained to me his best and most complicated trick. One that would induce confusion in those learning it. Thinking otherwise would alert this skydancer to something being awry. She seemed to pick up my confusion. "Oh, he's hidden that from you? Then I don't think it would hurt to tell you this: your father is wanted by the police of the Tangled Wood, and I am one sent by them. Do you think you could relay that to him?"
"Yes, madam, but he doesn't get word directly from me. Will you let me go out back and grab a notebook? He'll read that and he'll get your message." She agreed and I promptly left. I couldn't help but panic in the back room, after all what happened with that dragon whose life went wrong. Pops was convicted of a crime he commits every day, and he now needs to pull a trick out of his sleeves to get out of this one. The trick had to be good, else it be his last.
The only thing I could do to help Pops was to tell him about this skydancer, let him try to figure something out. And so I did, but Pops got real angry. "Kiddie think'n' she kin take 'way me bus'ness from me? Nah, she ain't gettin' a bit o' treasure! Imma run her off r'now fer thinkin' that. We finna give 't to 'er, kid." He talked noticeably lax behind closed curtains, but before a customer or possible employee, he was very formal.
We went out to meet the skydancer, Pops leading the way. He began. "Hello ma'am, you just caught me on my return. My son Diprosopia here tells me you wanted to speak to me about something?"
"Yes. Maindo, wasn't it? The Tangled Wood's crime stoppers reported a man like you out running this here casino and with some clear rigging. What do you have to say for yourself?"
"I have done nothing ma'am, as you might observe here, there's nothing I could do to cheat out my customers."
"Don't try to hide your tomfoolery under your fake moods. I'm not even bothering to read your head because I know dragons like you know how to hide in your own mind. Admit to your sins, or we'll have a genuine problem on our hands."
"As I have said before, I don't cheat out my clients. My son knows that as well as I do."
Pops always says how you appear before people determines how they think of you. Outside their sight, you could do whatever you want and the consequences could only be brought by a snitch. So he always told me to call him Boss in front of anyone outside the family or outside our small ring of close friends. "Yes madam, Boss doesn't trick the people here, we just run it as normal."
The skydancer snarled. "So Maindo, you've tricked your son too? Keeping him out on the true family business? Even getting him to call you "Boss" and not "Father" or "Dad"? If anything this is more a testament to your lies than anything else you've said before."
"As I said before and now again, I do not cheat my customers."
The skydancer got noticeably angry. "Then I'll have to use force. Under the authority of one of Shadowbinder's advisers, you are under arrest! Resist and I'll match you!"
Pops told me to run and tell Mum what was happening, that she'd know what to do. And in the heat of the moment, that was all I could think of doing. Mum panicked and gathered up my sisters to leave, and told all customers to promptly leave the casino. My father would most likely end up breaking more than the skydancer, and anyone in the building would be in danger. We evacuated, but I never got to see Pops again.
The Tangled Wood crime stoppers seized the casino. Mum was out on a limb. I could do nothing to help her or the rest of the family, and all I knew was that the only way to live out in the world was to explore it. With permission of Mum, I left the clan and went out on my own.
After the incident with Pops, I didn't want others to meet the same fate. That old dragon who went missing said he wouldn't have been on the run had he not been a con dragon. I made it my own goal, to stop others from going down that road so they wouldn't have to suffer. It was never my goal to report these drakes to any authority, and it's definitely not my goal now. Afsi and many others seem to think that, but I'm just trying to help.
So I went around getting rumors about scammers in general areas, and went out to find them. Most were unwilling to leave their craft, but after I exposed them to dragons who also looked to helping others reform, I could leave them be. Being in a casino and knowing a lot of tricks helps me to see through others'. It works almost all of the time, and the only times it doesn't I always get the trick on the second time through. I get paid for what I do, stopping the cheats and trying to get them to change their ways. That was and is my business.
One dragon I encountered asked me if I only did a debunking of gambling cheaters to which I had to respond affirmative, as I did not know then anything more. This dragon turned out to be somedrake like me, whose goals matched up close to mine. However, their department of conners was not the same, as they specialized in business scams or dragons like that. They saw that my ambitions could drive me farther than they could ever go, and so they taught me in the other craft. I already knew how to get past a sweettalking dragon, but through their teachings, those skills got sharper.
So I got more jobs and collected more money through stopping scammers as well as my original skill. Many dragons around knew me as the dragon to call, but others were afraid because they may be stopped. Some dragons that I came across would definitely not be swayed to a halt, and I regrettably had to report them. I only ever reported those for the lowest charges, so they wouldn't be cursed as an icicle deep in the Fortress of Ends. That was always what I tried to stop from happening.
There was always this one rumor that circulated around about a certain dragon I could never keep in one place. They were always about some skydancer whose lightning magic either pickpocketed them or cheated in a gamble. Some reports said that this dragon was white, while others said they were pink. But every time I got a report in some region of Sornieth, the dragon was already gone. I began to think that these rumors were pranks pulled on me to disorient my focus on other cheats, but it never truly worked.
I needed breaks every now and then from a nomadic life style, so I would stop by this one clan that welcomed any travelers. I was a frequent there, and they treated me as a friend. The clan would also tell its guests if there was some new dragon coming in, as some stayers were runaways that were let in.
One time I was staying in this clan to organize myself and get my reports all in line, a dragon informed me of an incoming guest. A white skydancer with pink highlights, coming after travelling around a lot and needing a place to rest. No one could catch her element, but the clan leaders did catch a description of her smooth voice.
There was a doubt in my mind that this was not the scammer in the rumors, as it would be pure coincidence that she'd come here. But I could never be sure that she was not, so I made up my mind to confront her and get a chance to talk. I requested to the clan leader that I meet this dragon and she not know who I am. At first he hesitated because of his personal rules, but he agreed to it because he knew I wouldn't send them to the authorities unless she was bad enough. And if she was, she'd probably try to steal from the clan, an undesirable move.
I set myself up by shrinking myself to fit in the tent assigned to the skydancer whose name was Afosiosi. I couldn't help but let out some magic signature as a shrunken form of myself, so there were just random flickerings of cyan here and there. There was no true way of revealing her elemental alignment without asking explicitly outside of anything electrical in the tent. That would be the lamp whose switch was at the front of the room, and the only light source until a candle is lit. So I sat in the dark for a little bit just to make the whole spooky encounter work.
At last the skydancer entered through the doorway. "Afosiosi, isn't it? Or is there another name you go by?"
"Afsi, if you're one of my friends. And if you are here before me, you'd want to be my friend? If so, I'd be glad to be at your service." I've heard dragons sweetalk their ways through problems, but Afsi was the first dragon I met who could make her intentions near invisible hidden under her words. But nothing is ever truly invisible.
"Maybe that's why I'm here, maybe it's not. The name's Diprosopia, Dippy with a Y for short. See now, reason why I came here in the first place was a white-pink skydancer and a money issue. Am I telling that wrong?" She did exactly what I wanted her to do. Her shock that I knew who she was caused her to zap the light switch with her magic, revealing that she was, in fact, a lightning dragon. "I only had a sneaking suspicion, high chance you weren't the one. But now you've used Lightning magic, something I recall as a very important detail. Now we're gonna have a bit of a challenge. Walk outside with me?" She exited first, me second.
Skydancers are the best cons. Inversely, skydancers are the best detectives. Both of these are because of the antennae set in their skulls, a detail so significant about a skydancer's identity. Usually the two sides would cancel each other out, but sometimes a dragon of a different species would either have to trick or uncover their adversary. I have a lot of experience in the former and not the latter though I figured it would be the same method. Every skydancer I came across, I always used that trick my Pops taught me that I could never forget.
I explained to the skydancer the rumors I had been collecting over the past few moons and how we came across the same clan by coincidence. It was a simple chat that led us into a space without dragons nearby. Afsi spoke. "So you're here to bust my plans? Because if you're like the others, that isn't happening."
We stopped and a flat stone slab sat between us. "No, I came for a challenge. See, I haven't found a dragon with skills like yours, and I need a little practice with my own hand. Sit, and show me something you can do. Bet me on some game you play, and I'll match you by seeing through it. I win if I see your trick." A common tactic I use to see the others' sleight of hand is to sit them down one on one. I told her that my reason for challenging her was so I could get practice. The real reason was so that I could potentially become friends with her and convince her not to keep doing scams and cons, so her fate would not be like Pops'.
She started with the classic "try not to break the surface tension of this glass of water" trick. I think if you go ask Afsi's file she'd probably explain it real well. She always loves to tell me tricks she's pulled in the past in good detail. She set it up and allowed me to examine the cup by picking it up, and she did nothing to it. That is until I set it down at which point a little bit of lightning magic snuck its way underneath. But I couldn't present that, I needed what she snuck.
I noticed that after the first turn (that turn being Afsi's), the cup would break its tension after two coins were put in. I took my turn of placing one coin inside and it came to the skydancer again. She moved out of her original position to add in her coin as allowed by the rules. However as she shifted, I noticed immediately the cup sank if only a centimeter down on one side. I then noticed a very small puddle of wax on the same side it sank down on, and I realized what had happened.
As the dragon put her coin into the cup I couldn't help myself but to take my move. I explained that I saw through her tricks and that I had won, as per our pre-game agreement.
The next game was one called 10000, explained in Afsi's file. I kept my eye on the die but there was no trickery involved for the majority of the game. Save for the very end, of course. I couldn't help but to snatch a peek at an arc of plasma charging both the die and the stone with my lightning eyes.
