Explorer • Jokester

Addie was hatched, not as a Pearlcatcher, but as a Spiral, and was every bit as adventurous as his parents. He played things a little riskier than his parents, however, exploring areas other dragons dare not go. He disregarded all warnings about haunted temples and cursed items, loving the thrill of the danger and the knowledge that came with it. He sold the artifacts he recovered to artificers and scholars for cheap prices, content to spread the knowledge and go hunting for more.

On an adventure through the Viridian Labyrinth, Addie ran into a nature spirit taking the form of a Fae, and swiftly nicknamed them Herb. Herb found themself charmed by Addie's daring nature, and since then, the two have been inseperable.

Addie’s wings fluttered with excitement as he made his way up the cliff-face, claws easily finding perches. “See anything up there, Herb?”

The nature spirit shook their head lightly, wings flapping slowly to keep aloft near Addie’s climbing position. “What’re we looking for, again?”

“It’s like… kinda like a Pearlcatcher’s pearl,” the Spiral explained, somehow focusing on both not falling and talking to his companion at the same time. “Except purple, y’know? Shadow magic, I think. That Skydancer down there told me about it.”

“So a mysterious Skydancer tells you about a spooky probably-cursed object, and you decide to retrieve it… why?”

“Why not?” With a grunt of effort, Addie successfully pulled himself up on top of the cliff. He sprang to his feet, adjusting his hat as he grinned at Herb. Herb's crests twitched in their version of an eyeroll. This banter happened every time Addie went on one of these miniquests. Really, Addie always felt the need to make sure that if anyone was going to interact with a cursed object, it was going to be him. His Shadow magic has manifested in the form of strange luck that had saved him from scenarios he should’ve had no way out of, and he’d opted to take advantage of it. He craved that rush of adrenaline, and if he could protect other dragons along the way by removing and deactivating curses… well, that was a nice bonus, huh?

The cliff was truly a spectacular sight. The view was gorgeous, showing off the Starwood Spire rather nicely. Addie had never been too fond of the Arcane realm, but he had to admit, it was rather pretty from up here. Atop the plateau was a small cave. Addie stuck his head inside the little entrance, taking full advantage of his noodle-like body to slither inside. Herb followed easily, their Fae form even smaller than the Spiral.

The place opened up on the inside, allowing Addie to spring back up into the air. In the center of the cave was an altar, and upon that altar rested a purple-tinted, glowing orb. He circled it slowly, examining it from every possible angle.

“Is that it?” Herb asked.

“It’s gotta be. Looks pretty cursed to me.” With a flick of his wings he zipped closer, looking over the item with a practiced eye. He could see runes twisting just under the glassy surface and could practically hear the thrall of the thing calling out to him. Of course, he’d done this many times before with various objects. He could just ignore it if he wanted to.

Herb gave a hum of discomfort, crests twitching. “It might be better to leave this one be. This place is giving me an awful feeling.”

On the other claw, Addie was starting to get rather excited. Herb may have been more sensitive to magic than him, but he had learned to trust his instincts. Not that he didn’t trust Herb, much the opposite, but sometimes…

Well, sometimes, Addie’s impulses won over him.

“Listen, I’ll just grab it, and we can get out of here. Think it’ll shatter if I hurl it off the edge of that cliff out there?”

“Maybe. When this goes poorly, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“Right.” Addie landed on the ground, balancing on his back legs long enough to stabilize himself by placing his front claws on the podium. He took a deep breath, mentally counting down. 3, 2, 1…

The orb was cold, unsurprisingly, as he snatched it up. He sat back, turning it over in his claws. For a minute, he thought nothing was going to happen—then the runes started shifting faster. Addie’s eyes widened as the orb started to glow, the light surrounding him—

“Addie? Addie! Come on, wake up…”

Addie’s eyes flew open. Immediately, he groaned. “By the Shadowbinder… my head hurts. What happened?” His body felt heavy and stiff, almost swollen.

“Uh,” said Herb, eloquently.

“Very helpful, thank you,” Addie muttered, sarcastically. He rolled off his side onto his stomach, ignoring the protests of his aching muscles and shifting his feet beneath him to stand. He stumbled as he did and instinctively flared his wings to regain his balance.

He froze as the tip of his wing came into view. That explained the weight on his back. Slowly, he folded in his too-large wings. He twisted his too-thick torso, trying not to trip over his own large claws, flicking his too-short tail up until he caught sight of the tuft of fur on the end. “Herb.”

“Yes?”

Addie looked back to them, doing his best to keep his voice from shaking. “I’m not a Spiral anymore, am I?”

Herb’s crests folded slowly. “Doesn’t look like it.”

Okay. Okay. This was fine. “This is fine. I can handle this.”

“Are—Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’ll be fine. I think.” He took a deep breath.

“Maybe it’s not permanent?”

“Maybe… what am I?”

“A Pearlcatcher.”

“Really?” Addie reached up to poke at his horns, then at his mane. His colors and patterning seemed to have remained the same, at least. That was nice. “Huh. Well, look on the bright side! It’s kinda neat to see what it’s like as another breed! Though, what kind of Pearlcatcher doesn’t have a—oh.” He cut himself off as he looked down.

The orb was resting by his fallen hat. It had turned an opaque off-white, looking for all the world like a normal Pearlcatcher’s pearl. The only way that he could tell it wasn’t was the runes just beneath the surface, now frozen and static. Addie grabbed the pearl, rolling it back and picking it up in his back claws. Strangely, he didn’t feel all that off-balance on three legs. The pseudo-pearl was a perfect counterweight. He picked up his hat, moving to put it on, but stopped when he realized it wouldn’t fit over his horn. “Hm.”

Herb laughed gently. “I’ll fix it for you, if you’d like. After we get out of here.”

Addie echoed the sound, stepping towards the exit. “Yeah, let’s go… home…” He paused. Stared at the hole in the wall. Then ducked his head sheepishly. He wouldn’t be able to fit through it, now—this Pearlcatcher form was much, much larger than a Spiral. “Herb? Please don’t say ‘I told you so’.”

Herb turned his gaze to the ceiling, expression filled with joking exhaustion. “Gladekeeper, help me."
