Nomaleas was the only child of the alchemist Hydrargyros and the warrior Khalkos, and sometimes it felt as though they were both more interested in her as an apprentice than a daughter. She didn't want to disappoint her parents, but she had no talent for alchemy and no passion for fighting. What had always fascinated her were the stories told by travelers. Eventually, she decided to leave her home behind and travel Sornieth to see its wonders for herself.

Her journey led her into the shadowed forest where she arrived at the beginning of a new moon. The clan she stumbled into had been out hunting and she was fortunate enough to enjoy their spoils without having to kill. She rested in the Traveler's Lodge with five other dragons, three of which were getting ready to start their journeys, the other two being a seasoned travelers and a newbie. She greatly enjoyed learning of their harrowing tales, each one more unbelievable than the last.

It turned out she'd roosted with Leona, a pathological liar with extravagant stories, and to her surprise, the two became fast friends. Until all of the lies unfolded.....

West to the Starfall Isles, east again to the Tangled Wood, through the Scarred Wasteland and back again to the Windswept Plateau. Worn down by her travels, somehow her wings carried her back again to the home lair she knew so well.

It seemed smaller, but maybe she had just grown. The library, filled with maps and books about long ago and far away, felt less magical than it had when she was a hatchling. She found herself doubting every traveler's tale, wondering how many were like Leona, and itched to seek out the truth of them herself.

She stayed only long enough to rest and recover before leaving to continue her journey.

Nomaleas traveled. For weeks, with very little contact with others. She felt uncertain of herself. With all the places she'd been, and all the clan's she'd met, she thought she'd be happy. But after the....disaster, if she could even call it that, she felt a little lost.

Her wings took her to the dreary Shifting Expanse. She looked up at the storming, writhing sky. Guess it was time to walk.

She traveled up the Lightning domain, keeping close to the edge. She wasn't completely sure of throwing herself into that unknown land just yet. She spent much of that time in deep thought. As much as she loved traveling, maybe ...it wasn't for her. But what was for her?

Eventually, the wildclaw found herself nearly at the Light territory. She could see the ruins of the Hewn City in the distance. She turned towards the dry desert to her right, and entered the dangerous, sandy wasteland.

She flew on, without a clear destination in mind. She found fellow travelers, who pointed her in the direction of a safe place, a resting stop for dragons like her. It seemed she now had a place to find. It was difficult, but she reached it safely. She was welcomed into the clan, called the Skyfire Sanctuary, by a friendly pearlcatcher. Banzee, the pearlcatcher, showed Nomaleas around, and brought her over to where there were extra dens for travelers. The wildclaw was quick to crash for the night...after being on the go for so long, it was almost nice to have somewhere to stay for the time being.

It wasn't long before she grew tired of the place, however. The sanctuary was a hot spot for explorers and wanderers. And every story she overheard, every tale she was within earshot of, reminded her of the Tangled Wood. She felt angry. Almost bitter.

She continued on without warning, flying off into the night.

But travel eventually cooled down her temper, as it always did. And although Nomaleas briefly lost her way in the territory above the Sea of a Thousand Currents - something must be going on down there, the dragons of the Water Flight seemed to be in a panicked frenzy (hadn't she heard a story? Something about the Tidelord...?) - the Scarred Wasteland seemed familiar, and soon she found herself back in Wind territory.
Even though there were still more clans to visit, more places to see, Nomaleas had missed the gentle wind of the Zephyr Steppes under her wings. Flying was not quite the same in other territories.

After a few laps around some nesting Skydancer pairs, and she decided to fly in a real wind for once. The Twisting Crescendo towered before her: And Nomaleas flew up into the tempest. A harsh breeze around her snout, powerful strokes that carried her further, and further still; This was flying, and this was what the wildclaw had missed about her home.

"Woahh! Watch out" A voice suddenly cried, and Nomaleas felt a leathery wing in her face as she collided with someone mid-air.

The two dragons barely had time to detangle themselves from one another when they were again rammed from the side by a wooden platform. The Cloudsong! The dragons heaved themselves onto the balcony and took gasping breaths. Out of danger, the two looked at each other and began to laugh.

Nomaleas and Emerald, as she soon found out, had a lot in common. The pearlcatcher, too, was a passionate traveler and even had some travel recommendations. After sharing a few more stories, Nomaleas said her goodbyes and let herself drop off the side of the platform, ready to embark on her next journey. She'd had enough of strong currents for a little while, anyways.

Nomaleas traveled. Back and forth across Sornieth, sometimes flying for days on end as few besides Wind dragons could. Though there were places where she stopped to rest – many clans welcomed travelers just as her home clan did – none of them ever felt like home. She was never tempted to stay long.

She saw wonders she could never have imagined. The shining spires of the Crystalspine Reaches, glowing as the dawn light refracted through them. A valley on the Shattered Plain where stone pillars had been carved by careful claws so that the wind sang as it blew through them. The vast library of the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, which put her own clan’s collection to shame.

There were terrible things too, of course. Too many clans torn apart by conflict or natural disaster. She was robbed in the Shifting Expanse, became lost in the Tangled Wood for so long she nearly forgot what day looked like, nearly died of a snake bit in the Viridian Labyrinth. But throughout Sornieth, the kindness of strangers was a near constant.

Eventually, she grew tired. She once again found her wings carrying her home, and this time she let them. She remembered when the familiar rolling slopes of the western edge of the Zephyr Steppes had felt suffocating, but now her old, small clan seemed comforting.

Things there had changed. Her mother had left for mercenary work and not returned; her father insisted the job was just taking longer than expected, but she could read the truth in her clanmates’ looks of pity. Many of the dragons she remembered from her childhood were still there, but there were newcomers as well; her small clan wasn’t quite as small anymore.

She found herself enjoying the bustle of travelers coming and going, of the many permanent members going about their business. It wasn’t quite the home she had known so long ago, but then again, she wasn’t that reckless, rebellious hatchling off to see the world anymore either.

She had seen the world. And, she thought as she watched her family and friends, the most important parts of it were right here.

Forgotten Poet's Tools
Part of her motivation for traveling had been searching for something she couldn't define, and part of it, Nomaleas had eventually realized, had simply been running away. Still, those had hardly been the only things driving her in those years spent far from home. She had loved seeing the wonders of Sornieth, the sheer diversity of lands and peoples. And she had enjoyed her many meetings and brief friendships.

When she finally found herself in a stable place, she tried to get back in touch with some of them. For many, that was impossible; they were travelers themselves, or from hidden clans even the couriers struggled to find, or she simply could not remember enough details to direct a letter to them. But with some, she was successful.

Hello!

I hope this message finds you all well. Your clan offered me a place to stay when I had just started traveling Sornieth, and now that I've settled down at home I wanted to thank you all for your hospitality! I've enclosed a small gift to show my gratitude.

Please tell Leona that I'm not mad at her anymore. Her stories were a lot of fun even if they weren't true, and she should become a storyteller or something.

Thank you for all the experiences.

Sincerely,
Nomaleas

My dear... friend.
Those words feel strange. It's been so long, and I'm afraid I led you wrong. The world was not like I told you. It is kind. Loving. Someplace warm. I lost so many of my hatchlings that I let the bitterness creep into my heart, when right in front of me, was someone radiating love.

The stories were twisted, often in a negative light, because at the time, that was all I could see. The friendships forged between us travelers... I didn't see it. And when I did, you were gone. I had no way of reaching out to you. I am sorry my friend. To the surprise of many, I have actually started traveling a little myself. I'm a story teller now. Of sorts. I have a daughter, Caszie and in a lot of ways, she's like you. Kind, loving, brave, and much to our dismay, adventurous.

My mate has since retired in his travels. The world is wide. I fear I only saw it as a small hole, when it is a never-ending expanse. He has changed how I see many things, and I am so grateful for this new view on life. My stories have changed to become less dark. The clan's hatchlings have taken to finding me before bedtime for a new tale.

You left your collection of broken glass behind. Don't cut yourself on them!

I hope to stay in touch with you, and hear all about your new life. And feel free to come visit anytime, my home will always have a spot for you.

Best wishes!
Leona

As Nomaleas found her place in the clan again, she took charge of the traveler's lodge; after all, few knew what travelers might want or need better than her. She enjoys meeting with the clan's many visitors, exchanging stories of the places they've been or plan to go.

She also took up a craft, making stained glass window and elaborate mosaics of stone, tile, and glass fragments. Almost every building in the clan features her work, and she sometimes collaborates with Maglove, the source of many of Avaeris's other decorations. Throughout her travels she had collected shards of glass and other small trinkets from across Sornieth, and she incorporates these into her work. One of her favorite pieces is a mosaic for Hani's made from sea glass, some from the Sea of a Thousand Currents.
