"I Remember the night we met,
I remember the things you said to me,
I remember your voice,
Your laugh,
Your scent,
That beautiful smile
Do you even remember my last name?"

______ I looked around with a sigh. Even though I was technically a plague dragon, I had always felt best, most like myself when I was in the icy Snowsquall Tundra. As I grew more confident in my strength and wings, I had recently started trying to go farther, climb at least one of the mountains in the Cloudscrape Crags, but I was never sure if I was up for the challenge, especially since I didn’t know if I could handle the extreme temperature. Today however, today was going to be the day. Maybe not everything would happen today, I knew I couldn’t ascend the entire mountain in one day, but I was going to at least start. I decided to look around at some clans nearby and see if anyone had advice or could guide me.
“There’s probably a clan over here, near these trees,” I thought to myself, hoping I would find someone soon, because those mountains were just begging to be climbed. I could easily picture myself at the top, wind ruffling my feathers. I wasn’t too worried about the wind or snow, as I had basically lived my entire life in the Southern Icefield, and I knew how to fly in cold temperatures.
“Nothing like what the temperature’s going to be up there though,” I reminded myself, trying not to get cocky, but also shivering with excitement. I shook out my wings and flew towards the small snow-covered forest I hoped dragons lived in. I strained my ears, listening intently for the sound of dragons laughing, or wingbeats, or anything that would signify I wasn’t alone here. I got my answer in the form of a young blue male ridgeback, about the same age as me.
“Who are you?” He asked with a playful smile.
“I’m Frostbloom.” I answered.
“Why are you here? Are you lost? Strange place for someone in the plague flight.” He said, his tone not hostile, exactly, but curious.
I was amazed he had been able to pick that up just by looking at me. He must have great eyesight. I took a closer look at him and saw that he was from the ice flight.
“I want to climb that mountain,” I said pointing. “But I think I need a guide, because it’s really tall. Taller than any of the small hikes I’ve done before.”
“Yeah you probably do. Tell you what, I’ll take you to my clan and see if any of them can help guide you.”
“Thanks! You still haven’t told me your name?”
“I’m Seaside.”
We walked through the forest, heading towards where he claimed his village was. I was a little confused about why he was showing a stranger, but I figured they must not fight a lot with neighboring clans. Eventually, we reached the main village, and he took me into a tent with a male Imperial in it named Star. He was also the same age as us and was in the middle of a heated conversation with a female coatl.
“Ooh that’s Holly! She’s really nice, and she and Star are good friends.” Seaside whispered to me.
“Hey Star, I want you to meet my new friend Frostbloom!” He said excitedly to Star.
“Um, hi?” I asked, startled that I was now Seaside’s friend. I mean, I wasn’t against the idea, but I wasn’t exactly used to long friendships, considering how often I moved around.
I glanced back at Seaside and saw that he truly was excited. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Holly exit the tent.
“Hi Frostbloom, what can I do for you?” Star asked.
“Uh, well, I was wondering-I mean, do you have anyone-“ I started, trying to put my thoughts into words when Seaside interrupted and saved me the embarrassment.
“She wants to climb the mountain, and she was wondering if any of us could guide her or anything, because she doesn’t live here, but we do, and also we don’t think it’s cursed like some others.” He said, emphasizing the last point.
“Oh, well, you two seem to have hit it off quite well, why don’t you show her?” Star asked Seaside.
“Wait cursed?” I asked quietly.
“Oh don’t worry, it’s not cursed, just one of our neighbors thinks it is,” he clarified.
Well that didn’t help. But on the other talon, I thought of the mountain again, and knew in my heart I had to climb it.
We walked out of the tent and ran face first into another skydancer.
“Ok is everyone here the same age?” I asked incredulously.
“Yeah, roughly. We’re a pretty young clan, we might have a couple of older members, but not many.” Seaside said.
“Wait what about Gretchen? Whatever happened to her? She was way older than any of us. Oh wait never mind, she’s hibernating or something.” The new dragon responded.
“Oh sorry, this is my friend Clint. I’m guessing he’s looking for Lime, his pet bird. Did he fly away again?” Seaside asked.
“Unfortunately. You haven’t seen him, have you?” He asked hopefully.
“I can’t say that I have,” I responded. “Sorry.”
Seaside and I went to another small house, and he said it was a shop for mountain-climbing equipment.
“Looks like the owners not home, so I’ll leave some money on the desk and we can get you a coat and an ice pick.”
“Will I need these things?” I asked, startled.
“Not need, but you’ll definitely want them.”
Seaside replied.
“Here, this coat won’t keep you warm, but it will prevent you from freezing,” he said, holding up a shimmery white coat with dark blue edges.
“Oh. Thanks.” I said, not expecting the kind gesture.
“And this ice pick should serve you well. You can keep it on your wing while your not using it, and as long as you compensate for the heavier weight, you can still fly.” He said, holding up another gift.
“Aren’t you going to take anything?” I asked,
“Nah, I’ve done this a couple times and I don’t need anything.”
He helped me attach it to my wing and showed me how to use it. Eventually, he thought I was ready and we went over to the base of the mountain.
“It’s midday right now, so we can maybe climb to that ledge there, it’s a bit less snowy.” He said, pointing to a spot on the mountain that looked exactly like every other spots on the mountain.
“Sure,” I said, trying to make it seem like I understood, while I was actually just starting to grasp that this was a very large piece of rock, larger than any small hill I had climbed before.
“I’ve got this,” I whispered, trying to convince myself it was true. “I can do this.”
“Of course you can, I’m coming with you,” Seaside said with a laugh.
