Century
Pandora, the Wandering Child
_______________________________

wandering child, you were nothing before the box

1. When she was little, she dreamed of being a dancer. Then, a traveller. She wanted to be weightless, like soaring across an open sea but better. She wanted to be starlight. She wanted her existence to be more than a flickering candle, then and now and gone.

2. She didn’t want to serve the deities, though that was her purpose. But what’s a single lost soul to the gods, anyways?

3. She leaves. She takes to the horizon, to the unexplored, endless ruins of the Lightweaver and her brood, and she doesn’t look back.

Quote:

It was storming in the Sunbeam Ruins.

Century turned her head to the sky in surprise at the first drop of water. She never expected it to rain here, especially with the sun still overhead, but Sornieth was a world filled with magic and mysteries, so she wasn’t too surprised. Closing her eyes, she sighed as the raindrops started to patter against the marble at her feet, slowly building up from an inaudible whisper of sound to a rumbling drum hammering against the bone-white stone. The water felt cool and refreshing against her scales, and Century found herself twirling into the sky, swooping over ruined pillars with no sense of direction, slowly getting more lost. There wasn’t a greater purpose to her flight, really. She was happiest when aimless.

In a moment, Century landed in a mysterious courtyard with a gentle THUMP, still giddy, still reveling in the thundering rainfall.

And then, as she took another step, there was silence.

Century opened her eyes wide, startled at the abrupt lack of sound and the sudden appearance of mist pooling around her feet. The ruins she wandered into had taken on a strange shadow. Even the sun seemed to have taken on a muted glow. It was as if a strange, muffled veil had been casted over all of her senses.

She could tell that it was still raining, but it was almost as if she was numbed to the sensation and sound. Her usually calm and collected thoughts seemed as distant as everything else. Warnings of ‘magic’ and ‘danger’ skittered across her mind like darting mice as she tried to make sense of the mist around her. The silence held a meaning to it, a meaning that kept slipping from her grasp. It almost seemed to push her further into the ruins, and Century couldn’t resist.

A trap...she tried to tell herself. But the thought disappeared underneath the waves of her subconscious just as the silence broke into quiet murmurs. It tugged at her mind, pulling her forward so quickly she almost toppled over in her haste to keep up.

There, in the center of a clearing, rested a box.

As Century neared the box, the mist and whispers seem to fade away, leaving her with an aching absence of all feeling. The box was beautiful. It shone brightly even in the muted sunlight, almost as if it was made of the essence of the gods itself. Century felt herself leaning forward, caught in a spell as her claws reached to grip the edges of the box...

Her scream pierced the silence.

The box shone like a newborn sun in her grasp, searing through her soul, almost setting the air around it ablaze. Her entire body was gripped in agony, left writhing on the ground.

Stop our pain...!

There was only one way to end the torment. Open the box.

She opened the box, and the box opened itself and the swift release from pain tore into her like a dagger. and from the box rose oblivion .
.
.

a thousand pained souls rushed to the sky, screaming in wordless terror, laughing-
-their laughs were the crackle of shattered glass

~

1. they don’t talk about how they found her there, almost all shadows, almost a ghost, barely anything more than just wind and echoes and bones curled around a box that held nothing but the faintest spark of defiance.

2. they don’t talk about how hope escapes the box but stays; tells her she is capable of mending

3. they don’t talk about her at all. She is a supporting actress in a theater of boxes and spirits. They call her Pandora, and her identity dissolves.

wandering child, you were nothing before the box
all you will ever be is no more than that moment
