Hive King

“Mother?”
“Yes my dear bee?”
“Tell me the story again, the one about the First Hive.”
Apis’ mother extended her wing, pulling him closer to her, “This is the last time tonight.”
The Northern lights reflected off the surrounding ice as she began her tale.
“Long ago, the Honeytummies lived in a place full of life. Forests were thick with trees, flowers of every color bloomed. The dragons of the First Hive thrived in their home. It was a utopia. One day, the hive was found by outsiders, they were welcomed in. Sadly it was no more than a trick. The trespassers were hornets. Vicious dragons who drove the Honeytummies out of the hive. Since this, no Honeytummy has ever returned to the gardens and I doubt any ever will.”
“I will mother. I will return. I will fight the hornets and reclaim the First Hive!” Apis pounced from under his mother’s wing.
“Calm yourself Apis. You will wake your father.”
“Yes mum.” He curled back into the warmth of his mother. Sleep soon found the hatchling.

Dreams started to swirl themselves into existence. Apis found himself surrounded by verdant trees. He had seen the evergreens that populated the area around his home but these trees were different. They seemed to glow like the sky when it danced. Slowly, part of the forest started moving towards the youngling. A great dragon covered in fauna approached Apis. She only spoke one word , “Return”.
His mind was then assaulted with flashes of past events. Honeytummies living peacefully, hornets attacking and destroying, Honeytummies fleeing and spreading across the land.

He woke with frightened, shuddering breaths. The light of dawn was starting to grace the horizon. His mother stirred in her own blissful sleep. Apis crawled away from his mother. She would never allow him to leave. So, he didn’t ask and just went. He had never known anything but his home. Apis realized that he would have to rely on instinct.

Sun shone down through the verdant leaves, bathing the forest in a spectacular green glow. Apis stood right in the middle of all the forest’s glory. A bee landed onto the tip of Apis’ nose. It wiggled it’s tiny abdomen and flew off. His eyes followed the bee, which did a nosedive into a bright blue flower. The undergrowth rustled off to Apis’ left. He scrambled up the side of a nearby tree.

A rose scaled dragon walked out into the clearing. Butterflies fluttered around her. A green deer spirit followed closely behind her.
A puzzled look crossed her face, “I was sure this was the place that Mother had told me to go.” the guardian glanced around the small clearing, “We will wait here Teb. Surely Mother would not lead us wrong.”

Apis called down to the dragon, “Is your Mother a dragon made of trees?”
“Yes she is. I am Albia and this is my familiar Teb. I was told to come and protect the life here. Is that you?”
“I think.” Apis watched Albia. She was so tranquil. Nothing like the brutal hornets he had seen in his dreams.
“Come with me to my clan. Whatever you have come to do does not pertain to me. But at least come be safe under the protection of my clan.”
Apis came down from his tree, “Ok.” was all that he said. Albia may seem nice, but Apis had thrown his guard up. It would take time for the trust to build.

His welcome to the clan reminded him of the Honeytummies hospitality. Most dragons ignored the hatchlings but this clan rejoiced at Apis’ arrival. They made sure he had enough flowers and honey to feed himself a hundred times. Apis decided that this clan was going to be a fine suitor for the start of a new hive.
