Biography

Pumpkin

So, about pumpkin here....

She's an actual witch, living in a cute Halloween-y gingerbread house in the middle of an enchanted forest. She mainly protects the local communities from bad voodoo and evil spirits, can create healing potions and break curses, cares for nature and the balance of magical forces, and watches over children. she is a rather powerful and skilled witch, despite being "only" 300 years old, and really, really loves her job and caring for/protecting others.

How she came to be like this? well, this is quite the long story that starts 300 years ago when a rather poor couple of bogsneaks living close to the enchanted forest were wishing for a son. a big, strong imperial or at least a guardian, who could help them with the work around the house and ,once old enough, could be sent to the king's court to become a knight, bringing wealth, fame and safety to his parents. they knew they were unable to have children of their own, but one day, the husband found an egg in his net while he was out fishing, and both he and his wife were convinced that all their praying had finally payed off, that this egg was ment for them, sent by the gladekeeper. But oh, how disappointed they were when they had to see that their egg did not hatch into a strong, glorious imperial, but rather a tiny, agile and bat-like creature they had never seen before. a GIRL on top of that, which was almost considered a curse because girls cant become knights, all they can do is marry, and for that you even have to bring some treasure into the guy's family! and then, the baby opened their eyes, finally cinvincing that this was INDEED a curse. a plague dragon, something seen as generally evil, creepy and a bad omen, of course, this was not a blessing but a mockery sent by the plaguebringer ! while the dad at least tried to accept his child the way she was ,the mother never managed to hide her disdain and disappointment, and tbh he didnt even try. named pumpkin for her soft orange scales, the little girl quickly learned to stay out of her mother's sight, and instead, wandered through the forest for hours, showing an early fascination with plants and insects, especially spiders. she always felt sorry for them, because apparently nobody liked them and found them scary just for the way they looked, and dang, she could sorta relate to that. despite everything, pumpkin was a thoughtful but really happy and content child, needing not much to be happy, just some dark and mysterious corner to explore and the soft moss under her paws. most kids around her villahe avoided her for her looks and because her family was so poor, but they tried to tease her exactly ONCE and then never again, pumpkin is a really friendly and warmhearted dragon but you dont want to mess with either her sass or her creativity when it comes to pranking. when she was around 12, she found a friend in the other outcast of the area, the only child of the town's nobles, a boy named Stephen Rutherford who had been found as an abanfoned egg as well . he shared her curiousity and insatiable thirst for knowledge, so they were mostly found outside exploring and making experiments and such, getting along great even though he was more interested in natural science while she was all about magic. however, one day in spring, he did not come to their usual meeting place, and he did not come on all the following days either, leaving pumkin alone again.
pumpkin was always warned of wandering to far into the forrest, because according to legend, a horrible old witch lived there, and her mother used the threat of "be quiet and do as youre told, or the witch will come at night and steal you" more than once, scaring the young dragon a lot-but also sparking an inexplainable feeling towards the topic, sort of curiousity...
things went worse during an exceptionally hard winter, when the mother finally decided she had enough of "wasting" the already scarce food on "that useless girl" and despite her husbands protest, she took pumpkin into the woods, under the excuse to gather firewood, and left her there to get rid of her for good-the witch would take care of the problem. and really, just in the folk tale of "hansel & gretel", the young nocturne wandered lost, hungry and aimlessly through the woods, and finally stood at the gate of the precious gingerbread house, almost unconscious of hunger, thirst and tiredness. and she decided that if she was about to die, she'd prefer getting eaten by the witch over starving to death, because in that option, shed get at least a taste of that delicious candy, for the first time in her life. however, here is where the parallels to the fairy tale ends. because when pumpkin found herself suddenly face-to-face with the fearsome witch, the first thing she heard was 'oh no my dear, not the roof, this stuff is out there for WEEKS,its probably dried out and gross already, come in and try some of the fresh one!!" turned out that nothing of what the superstitious villagers "knew" about witches was true. the witch, the kindest and most grandmotherly snapper lady ever, explained to pumkin during a hearty breakfast that witches are in fact GOOD people, magical and wise keepers or balance and protectors of the land, and that only a person with a strong connection to the ancient powers of nature could have been able to find her house. and she gave pumkin a choice : if she wanted, the witch would magically send her home after she finished her gingerbread and hot chocolate, she'd just wake up in her own bed. however, if maybe, the little nocturne could imagine to make use of the gift she'd been born with, and become a witch herself, the elderly snapper would be more than happy to take her as apprentice and successor. it was the first time anyone ever made her feel welcome, plus being a witch sounded wicked cool, so of course, pumkin stayed and learned how to cast spells, transform herself and others, care for magical creatures, reading the future and break curses. the witch treated her like her own beloved granddaughter, and was delighted to see that the little orange nocturne showed an unexpected connection to the magic of the land, even surpassing her own.
One day, after many, many years, the old snapper lady called for pumkin, telling her that it was time to finally pass the magic amulet that was traditionally worn by the master witch of the forest down to her apprentice, for she was old and tired and wished to join her husband, who had died many years ago, in the realm of the flamecaller. so little pumkin is the ruler and protector of the magical forest now, constantly expanding her immense knowledge of all things witchy, turning asswaffles into toads and is generally happy and cheerful in her beloved little house filled with bats, owls, and singing spiders.

despite being rather young for a master witch, she has already taken in her own apprentice, young tundra Livia, who constantly drives her insane with her hyperness and over-enthusiastic use of magic, and she would not want it any other way. she sees the girl as her own beloved little sister/daughter and more often than not even joins her in making mischief.

she has a special interest in watching over children, appearing at night in the dreams of those who don't have the best homes, promising them that in fact, they don't have to be afraid of witches, and that they will watch over them at night, turning those who abuse or bully them into toads ,and often leaves little blessings and magical stones to help those who need it. she also magically finishes the homework over night for kids who struggle with learning and don't get the support they need.

pumkin has twenty-eight familiars and constantly takes in more, and livia is not a single bit better. what a luck that the witch house is only small from the outside, while inside, it expands into exactly as many rooms as are needed at the time.
