"Have you come to offer yourself to our Shadowmother's service? Ah, you thought you had a choice - that is simply adorable."

A Dark Bargain

Her egg cracked to an empty, abandoned nest - deep within the darkness of the Tangled Wood, concealed from all who would prey on her by the Shadowbinder’s unknowing grace. Alone, she wandered, meeting other clans and learning of her species – and others. She grew clever, secretive and fierce.

When the urge to Search came upon her; she wandered far, though she kept gravitating back to the lands of the Plaguebringer; there, she found a Mirror, savage and wild, whom for a time, she wondered if she was meant for…

But no. It never quite fit, though Elke, as she named herself during her journey, stayed long with the vicious Queen and learned much of her ways. In this, she grew cleverer, and a touch crueler – but only, of course, when needed.

The Search urged her onward, her path vague and irresolute.

The lack of a charge started first to grate against her pride, and then, later, much later, to grind it to dust. The need was there, but she could not find the object which she sought. Adrift, she wandered home, to the Tangled Woods of her hatching, deep into territory she would otherwise not brave, the unsolvable itch driving her forwards, towards the only solution she could imagine.

Standing within the Forum of the Obscured Crescent, she stood before her Goddess – the only mother she recognized - and offered herself in the only end she could now find to finally soothe the merciless drive to find her mysterious charge.

But the Shadowbinder smiled, and drew her wayward child to her side; instead of accepting Elke to her service (for the Shadowed Mother would have all her children someday, and there was no need to hurry them all to her embrace) she offered a deal.

In return for the answer, the direction, the KNOWLEDGE of her charge, Elke would go forth and be fruitful, gathering a clan of her own about her and paying tithe with the children of her flesh, all to be granted to the service of the Mother.

To Elke, the deal was more than fair - it was an honor beyond compare.

And so the Shadowbinder whispered knowledge into the Guardian’s ear and set her on her way; away from the Tangled Woods and towards the lands of plague – her instinct had been correct, and her charge was within those lands.

She stayed, briefly, with the Mirror she still considers her closest and most volatile ally, and some time later came to a tiny cluster of standing stones. One of these stones she claimed, and carried back to her native lands. She settled at first on the fringes, finding a cavern open to the sky, eerie with tumbled stones and glowing moss – and deemed it good.

She found a mate, a wanderer, and after she’d taken what she needed of him, sent him on his way to serve the Shadowbinder, the first of many tributes. Only when her first eggs lay hardening within their nest did she crack open the stone she’d claimed, spilling amethysts across the floor as the geode crumbled in her claws.

Within the stone, a wisp arose, a scrap of magic – simple, a voice recorded long ago and trapped away for unknowable reasons.

It spoke, she listened, and remembered. And then, gently, lovingly, she consumed the sliver of magic.

“At last,” she thought to herself, coiling loosely and protectively around her eggs, “I have my charge. I am finally a true Guardian.”

No wonder she could not find it on her own. It was no physical object, not even a scrap of ancient magic that she was meant to protect – nothing tangible, but instead a hidden, forgotten secret.

And Elke was so, so good at keeping secrets.
