TThe dictionary definition of “dignity” is as follows: “1: the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed.” And yet, here I am, stuck in the Ice lair. The four of us are branded as weak, and we’re placed in the very back of the order. And it’s all because we’re weakest against Shadow, the flight of the lair. __We can’t help it, of course. Shadow has always been stronger than Ice. But we’re stronger than other flights here. Why do they feel like they can talk down to us? __Hold it. An idea had started to form in my mind. __Nannette, an acquaintance of mine, was busy reading in her bramble room. I knocked lightly on the wall. __“Hmm?” she said, not looking up. __“What flight are we stronger than?” __“Pardon?” __“You heard me.” __Nannette thought for a second. “Ice is stronger than Plague and Nature, but we’re strongest against Water.” __Because Shadow pales when faced with Plague, we don’t allow many of those dragons in. Right now, we have two, unless you count the ones in hibernation. But they won’t wake until the Shadow Council allows them to. __She must have seen the contemplative look on my face, because she asked cautiously, “Why? What are you thinking about?” __“I don’t know about you,” I started, “but I’m tired of being treated like… like we’re a waste of lair space. Can’t we use those who are weaker than us to our advantage?” __The spiral looked shocked. “You mean like a revolution?” __“Umm, sure.” Truth be told, I hadn’t thought of it like that before. “If only we had more Plague, then we’d have more power when we revolt.” __“I don’t know, Dignity. There could be a peaceful resolution to this. Silver is an ambassador, can’t we tell him to stick up for us a little?” __I could have stopped there. I don’t know why I didn’t. I had to say with hate in my eyes, “The Shadow Council needs to know how it feels to constantly be talked down to all their lives.” __“You weren’t even born here,” Nannette muttered, but I pretended not to hear her. __“They need to feel the effect of their actions can lead to dangerous consequences. They need-” __“Wow. Okay. Let’s stop here.” She got up and crossed the room to me. “I like your ideas, but we need to be tactful about this. If we get up and revolt without being much of a threat, the Council would take us out in a matter of seconds. Let’s see who we can get on our side.” __We strategized for the rest of the day until Aleena and Silver came in to tell us it was almost curfew. I gave Nannette a meaningful look as if to say, “Would they want in on this?” She nodded, and gave me another meaningful look. Somehow, I knew that she was advising me to be careful. __Aleena noticed the looks we gave each other. “What’s going on? Use your words.” __I ignored her demeaning comment. “You know how we’re not being treated… fairly compared to all the other flights?” I looked at Nannette, and she gave me a nod of approval. __Silver considered for a moment. Slowly, he whispered, “We founded this clan in the Southern Icefield, you know. Built it from the ground up. We were extremely successful, until a Shadow dragon called Zura came along. She was a donation from a clan, and came with some battle experience. When we took her in, we thought she would protect us. Instead, she threatened us.” Aleena continued, “She said that she would wipe us out if we didn’t move to the Tangled Wood. Zura also said if we defied her, she could take over and move everyone else anyway. There was nothing we could do. __“From there she proceeded to create the Shadow Council and to sort everyone else by flight. The dynamic of the other flights, the projects, and the dragons for sale changed, but one idea remained the same: Ice was weak and the easiest to keep in line. It didn’t even matter that we’re stronger than other flights.” __“It’s definitely infuriating,” Silver agreed. __Nannette cleared her throat. “What would you say if we said we had some ideas about taking action?” __“I’d say we’re all for it.” __“What if we said we’re thinking of something less than peaceful?” __“I’d say as long as we’re smart about it, it could work,” Aleena chimed in. __“What would you say about overthrowing the Council?” __Everyone looked at me. Nannette glared at me, signaling that I was being too blunt. __But Silver nodded. “We need to take our clan back. It could be the only way to settle this.” __"What do we need to do to make this work?" Nannette asked. __Aleena answered, “We should… persuade Illusion, Roden, Realm and Nightmare, and in turn they’ll tell the rest of their flights to side with us. Except for Roden and Illusion, of course. __“But we’ll need a Plan B, just in case we can’t overthrow the Council, at least for the time being.” __“Like what? Seceding?” I asked. __Silver considered for a moment, then answered, “Quite possibly. Then, everyone will be forced to take a side and we could even get other flights that Shadow doesn’t have power over, like Arcane and Light, or that they bully, like Fire and Wind.” __Suddenly, there was a voice at the end of the bramble hallway that led to our special portion of the lair. It was Pitch, the head of the Shadow Council. __“What are you doing?” he asked when he saw all of us congregated in Nannette’s room. “Not going to try anything, are you? Not that it’ll work. We’ll squash you like a bug if you put a claw out of line.” Laughing, he added, “Go to sleep. The Shadows aren’t good for you.” __“That may be so,” I muttered, “but there are things that can take you down, too.”
