Born not only small but also pale as moonlight, Verlaine opened her colorless eyes to a colorless world, and it never once struck her as wrong. What she lacked in size growing up, she made up for in spunk and personality. Her parents coddled her, but she never once understood why. In her clear eyes, she and her kin were just as brightly colored as the other coatls of the clan, the same hue as the favored. If anything, she thought the markings she bore were better than the most popular ones. Was it perhaps because she was small? No, it wasn't that. She had it. The other coatls were jealous. Jealousy is a wicked thing, she knows, turning friendly faces sour. They wanted her gone not because she was a plague, but because they weren't good enough for her and were jealous of her beauty, like a nymph or a goddess. Really, she was flattered! But, she had to move on. She wanted a lot more out of the world than the limitd opportunities a clan of coward coatls could give her, and took flight on small wings once she became of age. Verlaine's randomly picked direction takes her wings to the Lightning territory, where she crashes into the ground in exhaustion. Waking again, she finds herself not in the soil where she crashed, but nestled among hatchlings similar but smaller in size to herself, the tail of a great guardian coiled around the nest. Her first instinct is to squawk, scrambling away from the guardian in insult for being mistaken for a child. But she did not leave. The clan was welcoming to her, perhaps it was a place to finally grow. Metaphorically, of course. She apprentices for many willing dragons in the clan, growing bored one after the other. That is, until one dragon. A softspoken pearlcatcher with a warm, suffering heart. Small nimble claws were the perfect pick for fitting gemstones to precious metals, for shaping soft solids into detailed shapes. She could create, but not only that, she could make things as beautiful as she was. Verlaine had found her home. |
