Before he was Ruin, he was so much more. He was a gentle soul, who cared dearly for the simple things in life. He had a loving mate, a humble home, a future he looked forward to. And then They came. They took what little precious items the couple possessed, and the Pearlcatcher returned home to find that They had also taken his love’s life.
He wept. He lamented.
He hated.
He swore vengeance on the ones that had taken his lover from him. He forged a sword; within it he poured his sorrow, his rage. His memory mucus gave the blade an opalescent gleam that, when looked in certain light, visibly reflected the thoughts he had coated it in.
It was during his journey through the Wasteland, tracking his targets, that the Shade found him. It came in his sleep, seeped into his body and his blade. In time, he was overcome. He forgot where he was going. He forgot where he had went. He forgot himself. He forgot everything, except for the hatred and the despair that lingered in his heart, and the sad reflection of a love whose name was also lost that came to him in the blade he carried.
They took him from me. They must pay. These were things he knew, though he knew not the ones who carried the guilt. It was this fault that the Shade latched onto, and he came to see the whole world as his enemy. He wandered aimlessly for a time, lashing out blindly at any that had the misfortune of crossing his path. He wandered until Modre found him.
The God guided him away from wilderness, into a secret grove where the Shade’s voice is dimmed enough for him to know that those Modre calls their own are not to be harmed. They are to be protected. And so he lingers, blindly faithful to the creature that gave him solace, and vigilantly patrolling the territory, oblivious that he is slowly losing even more of himself the longer he remains.
