Biography

“Sing a little song for me,
Of starry studded skies.
Sing a solemn verse for me,
As I close my eyes.
Keep me in your thoughts at night,
Feel not any woe.
So sing a hymn or three for me,
For now I’ve got to go.“

Solemn wrenched himself away from the lullaby, letting the wind carry it away over the waves. Longing was difficult. He grappled with it constantly, at the worst times, when his heart was unprepared or worn or flayed wide open. It caught him in the night, as he teetered on the edge of sleep, and slammed him awake with tears in his eyes and sobs in his throat and he cried because he couldn’t do anything else.
It hurt.
Tonight was no different.
He lay back, floating on the surface of an ever changing sea, and watched the stars circle above. His sister had loved them dearly. Now they seemed to laugh at him and remind him of his loss.

“You left me alone, Sairose.” He whispered.

“You have me.”

Solemn smiled sadly and let Ikeya wrap her tail around his. She ran her talons over his fins, gently easing them down while his stuttered breathing settled.

“It’s been two years and the pain is still raw.” He said after a time, rolling with a wave until he faced the beautiful dragon he called his mate. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget about her.”

Ikeya hummed and nodded, her gaze still fixed on the sky. “Perhaps not. But would you ever really want to?” She smiled then, gently, and pointed above. “It seems she hasn’t forgotten about you.”


They watched the falling stars until morning.
