“Do you remember being free?”
“I thought I was,” the imperial murmured underneath his breath, a hint of questioning in his voice.
“So you know the difference between freedom and captivity?”
“Freedom is when you can mark your own path and do what you please, without someone breathing down your neck. Captivity is waiting for your next task, being a drone to a queen. So I would say... yes, yes I do know the difference,” he replied, deep green eyes staring at his interrogator.
“What happened that day? Better yet, what do you think happened?”
The orange dragon turned his head upwards to look at the blazing sunrise, so much like the one he had seen that day. With a soft sigh that carried through the breeze, he spoke, “I know what happened. Us dragons were shackled and ready for shipment... then the deity saved us. All of us. I just know it was her. For the first time in my life, I had a choice. I ran as fast as my small paws could carry me, and I plan to never look back.”
“Who is this mysterious deity? Surely you don’t mean one of the Eleven?”
A soft smile spread across his muzzle and he chortled,” no, no.... her name was Naomi.”
