Biography
Duvainor
Beautiful Darkness
Beautiful Darkness
Dragons do not speak to Duvainor. They don't even see him, really. But on nights when the moon has waned away to nothing, he can be found in the wilds surrounding the Sunbeam ruins, a glittering constellation that could be mistaken for nothing more except that he doesn't appear in the sky.
Unfortunate souls who lose loved ones will take their bones, pearls, charges, or anything else they can hope will provide a connection to the lost one and carry them out on these moonless nights, praying to deities and spirits alike that Duvainor will see them and appear. Because those lucky few are given one final chance to see those they've lost, one final chance to say goodbye.
She held the tiny body of a Nocturne in her talons, and tipped her head back to wail toward the cloudy sky.
"Please, please, just let me see him one last time. His children will never know him, but I did. And I want him to know that I'll care for them like my own." Her voice cut off in a sob, and the only sound was the wind brushing through the grass.
He carried the pearl like... well, like a Guardian would carry his Charge. Blood seeped from beneath his bandages, but all that he could think was how they had knocked him down to get to her, and he had been too slow, too slow.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, seeing the last fatal moments over and over in his mind. He had destroyed the assailants, afterward, of course, but it was too late. His Charge was dead, and all that was left was to pray that he could offer her one last apology. The stars looked down in cold judgement, and all was still.
One pool of shadow looked out, seeking another. Of course, once the other would have been there already, with nothing to miss at all. Now, hopefully, the star-spirit could give them one more night to roam the darkness together. A skeleton was laid out before the darkness, and then nothing moved but the stars in the sky.
A young fae staggered through the air, gripping a talon the size of her body. Her brother flew listlessly beside her, staring unseeing into the dark. She turned out toward the night, eyes blazing. "Bring her back. Let us thank her for this, for giving us life, for protecting us with her life." The fae's frills stood straight up as she shouted out at the night, "Father wouldn't come with us, so this is all we have! But I've heard the stories, and this has to be enough! Now, BRING HER BACK!" The echoes of her voice rang through the night, swallowed by the darkness.
Many come to seek Duvainor's last mercy. Mates, children, parents, charges, guardians, friends... in short, family of all stripes. And some nights, when he's feeling especially kindhearted, the stars come down from the sky and those fortunate unfortunates find what they're looking for.
May they have peace of it.
