They ask, and she never answers, because she doesn't know how to respond.
Why won't you stay? Why won't you settle?
Elvira is not of wind or swift of wing, but she is quick and clever and unafraid to take flight. She is bold in the face of danger, courageous in the face of pain and strife but she just doesn't know how to stay.
Come home, her parents plead, through letters and ink and desperate tales of life back home in halfhearted attempts to make her feel nostalgia. Come back to us.
But Elvira is bitter from being sold to the highest bidder and cold of heart from the things she's seen on her travels, so all she does is shut her eyes and look away.

She never stays in one place for long, always on the move, on the run.
Elvira remembers faint memories of being younger, more naive, watching spirals flit throughout the sky, looping free and unhindered. Breezy eyes, free to fly and wander far.
But she is of light, not wind, and so she must stay and study through dusty tomes.
Don't dragons learn from experience? By seeing, doing, being and flying free? Just because you know every aspect of how a wing works doesn't mean you necessarily know how to fly, if you've never done it before.
Elvira wants the truth, all of the truth, and she can't trust old books and worn pages to do that for her.
(They named her all truth, after all. They should have seen it coming.)
So when her parents inevitably send her away for a clinking bag of dirty coins, she sets herself free.
